City Manager Elke Doom

Last Tuesday, KVAK invited new Valdez City Manager Elke Doom into the studio to discuss the City Council Agenda. In a second interview, Doom introduced herself to the public and KVAK asked questions about her history and plans for the future.

 

With deadline approaching to run for city office, here’s the list of potential candidates so far

Here is the status of nominating petition filings thus far. Citizens listed below have picked up a petition. “(FILED)” is notated after the citizen’s if they have filed a valid petition.

 

Those interested running for election have until 5pm on March 16th to file.

 

CITY COUNCIL (TWO YEAR TERM) – Two vacancies

To clarify (*) – Candidates must file nominating petitions specific to seat and term length (example: CITY COUNCIL –TWO YEAR TERM). One candidate picked up City Council nominating petitions for both two and three year terms – notated by a (*) below. This is allowed and they may gather signatures on both the two and three year Council petitions. HOWEVER, they may only file for one term length. (Example: A citizen picks up City Council nominating petitions for both two and three year terms. They gather signatures on both petitions. Prior to 5pm on March 16th, they must decide whether they want to file for the two year term or the three year term. They would then file only that petition with the City Clerks Office.) Please let me know if you need further clarification on this process.

Required Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; knowledge of sport, ability to communicate with parents and students; strong moral character, current First Aid and CPR certification, background check when hired, able to complete AASA Coaching Certification within a year of hire date.

VHS Cheerleading Coach

November 29, 2017- March 24, 2018

Required Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; knowledge of sport assigned; ability to communicate; maintains strong moral character; current First Aid and CPR

certification, pass background check when hired, and complete AASA

Deadline to run for City Council and School Board is this Thursday, March 16th

Nomination forms may be obtained at the City Clerk’s office. Final date for filing a nominating petition is March 16th at 5pm.

City Council:

One (1) Vacancy to Serve a Three (3) Year Term

Two (2) Vacancies, Each to Serve a Two (2) Year Term.

School Board:

Three (3) Vacancies, Each to Serve a Three (3) Year Term

One (1) Vacancy, to Serve a Two (2) Year Term.

Bucs Travel for Regional Tournament

The Buccaneer basketball season is coming to a close. This week the varsity basketball teams will be traveling to Delta for the Aurora Conference Regional basketball tournament. The Bucs will travel up this Wednesday and compete Thursday through Saturday for a chance to go to the state tournament in Anchorage. The tournament is set as a double elimination where the 1st and 2nd place winners of each bracket will be invited to play in the 3A state tournament. This year the Lady Bucs and the boys team will both be going into the tournament as the number three seed overall. Click the links to view the full boys conference standings and girls conference standings. The girls first game is scheduled for Thursday at 10:30am against the Eielson Ravens. The boys first game is scheduled for 1:30pm against the Galena Hawks. In addition, the VHS Pep Band with director Ann Norris will be traveling up to Delta with the basketball teams to attend and perform during their games.

Cheerleaders to Compete At Regions

This Wednesday the VHS cheerleading team will be competing in the regional cheerleading competition. The team will travel to Delta this Wednesday to compete. The Competition will be held during the Aurora Conference basketball tournament at Delta High School.
