Diane Jewkes of North Pole won the 1st place weekly prize in the Valdez Halibut Derby with a 117.2 pound fish she caught June 17th aboard the Moscato Myst.

A normal weekend with the sun shining in Valdez would generally mean a town full of people enjoying scenery, fishing and tours.
The Valdez Halibut Derby kicked off Memorial Day weekend and three Fairbanks anglers filled the top three spots on the leaderboard. Charles Young of Fairbanks keeps his boat in Valdez and has fished in Prince William Sound for years. Young spent the day out on the water with his family celebrating his granddaughter’s 5th birthday.
The weigh-in will be open with new safety protocols, including observing social distance requests that are posted at weigh-in. The 1st place prize for 2020 is $5,000, 2nd place prize is $1,500 and 3rd place $750.
The Valdez Halibut Derby will begin May 23rd, Halibut Hullabaloo will be June 5th-14th
