It’s a pretty sure bet that there’s a silver salmon bigger than 14.88 pounds swimming around in Prince William Sound but whether an angler with a Valdez Fish Derby ticket will catch it and weigh it in before the end of the Valdez Silver Salmon Derby is anyone’s guess.

A normal weekend with the sun shining in Valdez would generally mean a town full of people enjoying scenery, fishing and tours.
The Valdez Halibut Derby kicked off Memorial Day weekend and three Fairbanks anglers filled the top three spots on the leaderboard. Charles Young of Fairbanks keeps his boat in Valdez and has fished in Prince William Sound for years. Young spent the day out on the water with his family celebrating his granddaughter’s 5th birthday.
