
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Glennallen Field Office has opened a 30-day public review and comment period to inform the BLM analysis for Valdez Creek Mining Company, LLC’s (VCM) proposed amended plan of operations to add two additional federal mining claims to its existing operating plan.
The final portion of the Port Valdez drift study being conducted by the Prince William Sound Regional Citizens’ Advisory Council and the Prince William Sound Science Center will begin tomorrow, Tuesday March 21st. The drifter buoys, about the size of an average shrimp pot buoy, will be released March 21st and retrieved March 30th. Please be cautious when navigating around these buoys, and DO NOT TOUCH THEM! They are being monitored via GPS and need to be allowed to go where the current takes them. The buoys will be labeled PWSSC. For more information on this project, visit pwsrcac.org or call 834-5000.

Mollie Good was appointed President of the Alaska Library Association Executive Council at the organization’s annual general membership meeting in Ketchikan, Alaska. Ms. Good will serve a one year term as president.
This week the VHS varsity basketball teams are traveling to Anchorage for the 3A state tournament at the Alaska Airline Center. The tournament is scheduled to take place this Thursday through Saturday. This is the first time both Valdez teams will travel to the state tournament since 2013. There are eight 3A teams in the tournament. The Lady Bucs are seeded as the 7th overall team. Their first game will be at 11am Thursday, March 23th against Sitka. The Boys team is seeded as the 5th overall team, and their first game of the tournament will start at 3:30pm on Thursday against ACS.

This past weekend the Lady Bucs competed in the 2017 Aurora Conference Basketball Tournament. Valdez earned a hard fought victory in their first game against the Eielson Ravens. After being down in the first two quarters of play, Valdez outscored the Ravens in the third quarter 15-4. In the 4th quarter the Lady Bucs carried their momentum from the previous quarter and won 54-41. Valdez was led by the outstanding play of sophomore Sydney Johnson who scored 18 points and grabbed 20 rebounds. The Lady Bucs played again later that day against the Galena Hawks for a spot in the championship game. After even play through three quarters of basketball, Valdez outscored the Hawks 18-9 and won 43-33. The Lady Bucs were once again led by Sydney Johnson who scored 14 points and again recorded 20 rebounds for the game.
On Friday, the Lady Bucs faced off against the hometown Monore Catholic Rams for 1st place. At the end of the first quarter the Lady Bucs led 7-3. In the second quarter the Rams fought back and at the end of the quarter the teams were tied 12-12. In the third quarter, Valdez held Monroe to single digit scoring to take the lead. In the final quarter the Rams weren’t able to recover from there deficit and Valdez claimed the victory winning 36-31. Valdez was led by Sophomore Carlee Fleming who scored 16 points including 3-5 from the three-point line and Sydney Johnson who scored 10 points and recorded 19 rebounds. The Lady Bucs now look to the state tournament scheduled for Thursday, March 23rd through Saturday, March 25th at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage. The girls first game will be Thursday against the Sitka at 11am.

The boys varsity team competed in the Aurora Conference regional basketball tournament in Delta this past weekend. The Bucs first game of the tournament was against the Galena Hawks. Valdez was dominant for most of the game outscoring the Hawks in each of the quarters, ultimately winning the game 61-36. Sophomore Bennett Hinkle was the standout player for Valdez during the game scoring 15 points and recording six steals for the game. With that victory, the Bucs played the Delta Huskies later that day. The Bucs started the game hot, outscoring them 16-9 in the first quarter. They went on to outscore the Huskies 25-10 in the second quarter and Valdez led 41-19 lead at the half. The Huskies were never able to recover and Valdez won 66-50. Valdez was led by sophomore Bennett Hinkle who scored 20 points and senior Seth Auble who scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
On Friday, the Bucs competed against the Monroe Catholic Rams in the championship game. After a closely contested first half, the Rams came out with a small 25-22 lead at the end of two quarters of play. Throughout the course of the game, Monroe maintained their lead and were able to stop Valdez during a last minute key run in the fourth quarter to win 47-42. With that loss, the Bucs played Saturday for 2nd place and the final spot at the State Tournament.
On Saturday, Valdez played the Eielson Ravens for 2nd place. At the end of the first quarter Valdez led 14-12. In the second quarter Eielson had a small run and went into halftime with a 29-25 lead. In the third quarter, the Ravens went on another run and had a nine point lead going into the fourth and final quarter. In the fourth quarter the Bucs turned up their defensive pressure and went on a 21-4 run to close out the game. Valdez won with a final score of 55-47. With that victory the Bucs finished the tournament in 2nd place. They will now go on to the state tournament which is scheduled for Thursday, March 23rd through Saturday, March 25th at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage. The boys first game will be Thursday against the ACS Lions at 3:30pm.
