6th grade:  Anthony Kelley – “Great leadership, honesty, hard worker and responsible are all qualities that Anthony displays in class.  Anthony works well with other students and has a great sense of humor.  He would make a great math teacher!!!

7th Grade: Caedance Leadbetter – “Caedance Leadbetter was nominated for and awarded “Super Husky” status for her high degree of effort, tireless good cheer, and wonderful attitude toward learning.  Keep up the good work, Caedance.

8th grade: Kaci Jones – “Kaci Jones comes to school with a bubbly personality every day and makes it a point to say hello to her classmates and teachers.  She is a positive addition to our school and a pleasure to have in class with her pleasant demeanor.

Earthquake remembrance held last Monday


The Pioneers of Alaska held an Earthquake Remembrance last Monday at Kelsey Dock to honor those lost in the 1964 quake. Though the snowflakes fell heavily during the ceremony, those who were lost were remembered once again. The ceremony included a proclamation read by Mayor Ruth Knight, a prayer, and a moment of silence.

Proposition to limit marijuana establishments on May ballot

A proposition to prohibit retail marijuana stores, cultivation facilities, manufacturing and testing facilities is on the ballot for the May 2nd municipal election. A “Yes” vote means that commercial marijuana establishments will be prohibited within the boundaries of the City of Valdez to include a 10 mile area within the adjacent unincorporated borough. A “No” vote means that commercial marijuana establishments will be allowed in the City of Valdez as authorized and regulated in Chapter 5.06 of the Valdez Municipal Code.

Tax day is Tuesday, April 18th

If you’re still trying to get your taxes finished, you might be glad that tax day is three days later than usual. This year, April 15th falls on a Saturday, which postpones the deadline to the next legal workday. Sunday, April 16th is Emancipation day in Washington D.C.. Because it falls on a weekend, Monday, April 17th is the legal holiday in D.C.. Under the tax code, legal holidays in the nation’s capital affect the tax-filing nationwide. Tax day is officially Tuesday, April 18th.

File your taxes or apply for a six-month filing extension by midnight.

VHS Band Travels for Jazz Festival

This weekend the VHS band will be participating in the 2nd annual Valley Jazz Festival at Palmer High School. The band will leave this Thursday, and participate in various music clinics on Friday and Saturday. In addition, the band will also be participating in the nightly festival concerts alongside the featured musicians. The Gala Evening Cavalcade of Stars concert on Friday will start at 5:30pm. The Gala Honor Group concert on Saturday will begin at 6pm. All concerts will be hosted at Palmer High School and are free.
