Wrestling – “Throw Down in Snow Town”:  (Coach Tyler Thompson)

Dustin Woods

It was a great weekend of wrestling in Valdez with approximately 150 wrestlers participating in this years tournament. Five Valdez wrestlers took to the mat this weekend and showed great much improvement from the past weekend. These wrestlers consisted of Caleb MacPherson (113lbs), Connor Britt (138lbs), Jayce Lindekugel (145lbs), JT Ginn (160lbs), & Dustin Woods (170lbs).

Each wrestler battled hard this weekend. Win or loss, they came out of each match a better wrestler than before.

Jayce Lindecougal

Caleb MachPherson: 0-2

  • Caleb took to the mat at his very first varsity tournament. Caleb is eager to make adjustments and prepare for the next competition.

Connor Britt: 0-2

  • Connor experienced a few tough losses this weekend but was able to identify what he needs to work on to help him come out on top in these matches.

Jayce Lindekugel: 1-2

  • Jayce wrestled some great matches and is beginning to see what he is capable of. With small adjustment Jayce will be making his way to the podium in no time.

JT Ginn: 2-2

  • JT came out with some fire this weekend looking to make his mark as a Valdez wrestler. JT picked up a few pins while suffering a few close losses as well. JT will be back in the room this week to make changes that will get him on the podium in weeks to come.

Dustin Woods: 3-2

  • Dustin wrestled some exciting matches this weekend picking up a few big wins along the way. Dustin is beginning to realize his ability to score, and score often. With a little work in the room Dustin’s performance will surely improve as the year progresses.

Thank you to everyone who made Throwdown in Snowtown possible. This is a tournament that teams look forward to every year and that is thanks to all those that give their time and energy to make it happen.

Coaches Comments (Joe Robison)

  • This was a tough trip for the guys, as we traveled to and stayed at a different school each day.  They overcame adversity and played extremely hard and very well.  Not only did the boys play well, but they also represented both Valdez, and the middle school, very well.

Highlights:

  • For the “A” team, Allen Watson played extremely well defensively this weekend.  Bryce Tucker played very well, and provided a scoring spark.  Payton Gage and Landen Case also played well.
  • For the “B” team, Anthony Kelly played really well both offensively and defensively.  Griffin Hastings played well inside, with Justin Barnes also providing some scoring.

BOYS B TEAM PLAYED WELL IN SECOND HALF THIS WEEKEND

B Team Boys were able to win all of their games this weekend, keeping their undefeated title. B Team boys had a great weekend on the road, with all 17 players getting court time and contributing to the wins.  Coach Wyatt Duncan said, “It was a long weekend on the road for the boys, traveling hundreds of miles between each game. They started off slow in all three games, but came alive in the second half of each game to secure the win”. “They have come together as a great team”, Duncan said.

However, he came back to pick up a fall in the second round on the consolations side of the bracket. Lindekugel was brought down in the next round after a heart wrenching loss in triple overtime.

Comments:

The drive to and from Palmer went very well. Clear roads and weather on the way down, and hit a snow storm in Eureka on the way back. We did not get to take the entire team due to illness, but the swimmers who went did seem to be doing much better than they did the weekend before which is great. We have about two weeks to get healthy & prepare for Regions.  I am very excited about Regions and I can’t wait to see how this tough team preforms!!

Highlights:

This swim meet was literally a dress rehearsal for Regions. We got an opportunity to swim in the pool & against all the teams that we will be seeing at Regions. The veteran swimmers were faster at this meet than they were at Regions last year. With our Preparation & Technical suits I feel we will have an excellent showing in two weeks.

VHS Varsity Volleyball:  (Coach Ron Langseth)

The Lady Bucs traveled to Fairbanks last weekend to Host Hutchison High School.  On Friday the Ladies overcame their slow start to defeat the Hawks 25-16, 20-25, 26-24, 25-19.  The ladies played like they just got off a 9 hour bus ride…and they did.  With the tired legs from the ride the ladies overcame their slow start to win the 26th straight Aurora Conference game.  The Bucs were led by Kassi Howards attack as she totaled 16 Kills with just 4 errors totaling a 40% Kill rating.  She was joined by Bobbi Mott with 15 Kills and Sydnee Johnson with 11 Kills.  Defensively the Bucs were aided by Sydnee Johnson who had 6 blocks while Linnea Langseth grabbed 38 digs.

On Saturday the Ladies made a few corrections and took home a 3 set win defeating the Hawks 25-22, 25-17, 25-19.  With our adjustments the ladies reduced the unforced errors.  The Ladies improved their serving to 91% as a team.  Serving was strong from Kaylee MacDonald and Kendall Wesenberg who both served 100% while Linnea Langseth served for 94%.  Kaylee MacDonald served 4 aces, Langseth and Fleming each had 3.  Bobbi Mott led with 13 Kills while Linnea Langseth aided defensively with 41 digs.   Kendall Wesenburg added 15 Digs.

The Ladies have next weekend off as they prepare for their their last conference games against Monroe.
