ADN – As deafening cheers for Barrow rang off the walls of the West High gymnasium throughout Saturday’s Class 3A state volleyball championship match, the Valdez Buccaneers just looked at each other and smiled.

The Buccaneers used the pro-Barrow crowd as motivation to sweep the Whalers 25-16, 25-21, 25-13 and claim their second state title in three years.

Volleyball – State Tournament:  Coach Ron Langseth

The Lady Bucs Volleyball team had what many consider the weekend of a lifetime!  For the 12 Ladies sporting Black, Blue and White it may be considered a dream come true…from this coaches perspective it was simply the result of hard work, dedication and a positive look at what can happen when a group sets a goal.  And now for these twelve…they can call themselves CHAMPIONS!  STATE CHAMPIONS!  Nine days into this seasons practice coach Langseth met and said to this group that he had a feeling that this could happen…that they could become the Alaska State Champions…that was the same day senior Linnea Langseth broke her ankle…that along with Bobbi Mott already out with an ACL injury was simply a setback to say the least.  Through the leadership of the one remaining senior, Kaylee MAcDonald the young Buc team persevered and prospered.  Fast forward to the State Tournament, and Senior Setter MacDonald now with a full team and ready to peak arrived at the ASAA State Tournament.  MacDonald along with Langseth, Mott and Carlee Fleming were in familiar territory, as they are the remaining crew from the 2015 title team.  Ready and poised the Bucs under their senior leadership pounced early, dispatching the Nikiski Bulldogs 3-1, winning 25-14, 11-25, 25-13, 25-12.  Next was the defending state champs the Mt. Edgecumbe Braves.  Again the Bucs stayed focused and put away the Braves in three straight sets. 25-22, 25-17, 25-23.  On to the Championship Bracket  were the ladies faced a formidable Grace Christian school.  Again the ladies prevailed winning 3-1.  25-18, 25-11, 25-15, 15-25, 25-14.  In the Championships the strong Lady Bucs would face the hard hitting Barrow Whalers.  In front of packed house at West Anchorage, the Valdez Ladies proved they were the team to beat ousting the Whalers in three.  Valdez would not be outdone.  25-16, 25-21, 25-13.  AND NOW STATE CHAMPIONS!

This is your chance to go online and apply for hunt options you hope to win for the coming season. The six-week application period extends from November 1 to December 15 at 5 p.m.and applications must be submitted online.

Draw hunt options are featured in the 2018-2019 Alaska Drawing Permit Hunt Supplement, available now at Alaska Department of Fish and Game offices, most license vendors, or online on the Drawing Hunt Supplements page.

Be sure to apply early! Waiting until the last few days may lead to delays due to high traffic on the website.

Drawing results will be posted on the department website on Friday, February 16, 2018. Individual results will also be emailed directly to all applicants.

For more information about this year’s drawing hunts and application process, visit the Drawing Hunt Permits Information page.

VHS Weekend Wrap-Up – November 6th, 2017

VHS Volleyball:  (Coach Ron Langseth)

It is not often a coach gets to experience what this coach has experienced!  In a career of 26 plus years you experience much from defeat to hopefully greatness.  My experience here while coaching the LADY BUCS has been special to say the least.  A State Championship, three region titles, piles of Tournament titles and the opportunity to work with so many gifted student athletes.  All of them have been Champions in one way or another…from the 2015 crew who was led by Maddy Fleming , Zoe Langseth and Mesa Rorher to the group now led by Bobbi Mott, Kaylee MAcDonald and Linnea Langseth continue the passion to achieve greatness.  It Started with that State Championship group, who played with this year leaders and continues today…a win streak of 32 Aurora Conference  Games.  Never before have I seen that.  Their mission however is not complete…another Championship is in their sites.

At Region last weekend the Lady Bucs cruised through the tournament.  In their first game against a Formidable Delta, the Ladies won in three straight sets.  25-14, 25-14,  25-15.  Next We played Monroe who proved to be our greatest competition…in the end we bested Monroe winning 3 sets to 2.  25-15, 22-25, 18-25, 25-12, and 15-13.  In the championship we later faced a scrappy Hutchison who we dispatched in three straight sets.  25-13, 25-15, 25-12.

This weekend proved to be a great team effort.  as a team we served 92% on all games while our passing was second to none.  Langseth led her trio of passers including Watts and Wesenberg to many great digs throughout the weekend.  Our Hitters, led by Johnson and Mott along with Seiber and Howard did a great job.

Setters Macdonald and Fleming continue to distribute the ball well…in all a great team effort pulling together to complete the 3-peat.

Making the All Conference Team are Linnea Langseth, Kaylee MacDonald, Sydnee Johnson and Carlee Fleming.  Bobbi Mott was selected MVP of the Aurora Conference.

Cordova Games (@ Cordova)

Coaches Comments:

Both the A and B boys teams played well this weekend in Cordova.  The B Boys team went 1-1, avenging a previous loss to Cordova, while the A boys went 2-0.

The B boys won a close game Friday, making a free throw at the end of the game to break a tie.  They ran out of gas on Saturday, after overcoming an 11 point deficit to eventually take the lead.  They couldn’t hold on, however.

The A boys won both Friday and Saturday night by double digits.  The boys played well, extending their record against Cordova to 4-0 this year.

Highlights:

For the B boys, Justin Barnes played well.  Justin hit a free throw at the end of the game Friday to give Valdez the win. Justice Reed played his best game of the season on Saturday.

For the A boys, Josh Baczuk, Dennis Mott, Allen Watson, and Landen Case played really well.  Dennis was a force inside, while Josh, Allen, and Landen all had really good offensive games.

As a whole, we played really good defense on Saturday, holding Cordova to 15 pts.
