NYO Mini Meet – Coach Rod Morrison

The Native Youth Olympics the sport, which reflects traditional Native tests of strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance, has become very appealing to many students.  The NYO events are competitive, but not in a cutthroat way. Athletes assist each other during the events, providing pointers and encouragement and NYO judges often stop to explain a better technique to competing athletes.

On Friday and Saturday, April 13-14^th  a Regional NYO Mini-Meet was held at Gilson Middle School. This home meet is a qualifier for the State Native Youth Olympic Tournament, that will take place at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage, April 26-28th.

Valdez athlete Evan Alexander, set a new school record in the Scissor Broad Jump at 31’ 3 1/4”, and Ben Kompkoff tied the One-Foot High Kick Record at 100”.

We would also like to thank the many parents, and community members who volunteered, donated food and materials, and provided support and assistance during the events.
