VPD responds to fatal vehicle / pedestrian collision

On 4/8/18, at about 0230 hours, Valdez Police responded to a report of a female pedestrian who was struck and run over on Chitina Drive, outside of the Boardroom Bar, by a vehicle that left the scene of the collision.

Upon arrival, Valdez Police Officers began life saving efforts on the female victim, identified as Chellsie Ruby Marie Hoffman [7/15/86].  Valdez Fire Department EMS responded shortly after, continued life saving procedures, and transported Hoffman to the Providence Valdez Hospital.  At 0320 hours Hoffman was pronounced deceased.  Next of kin has been notified.

Witnesses that observed the fatal collision outside of the Boardroom Bar provided Valdez Police Officers with a description of the vehicle [a green 2017 Dodge Ram 2500] and the driver [identified as ERO VICTOR WALLI, 8/12/71].  Officers located both the vehicle and WALLI at a residence on Falcon Avenue.

WALLI was subsequently arrested and transported to the Valdez Jail, where he provided a breath sample for the Datamaster at 0530 hours, registering a .305 BrAC.  WALLI remains at the Valdez Jail awaiting arraignment on criminal charges of Manslaughter, DUI, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.

Police Department wins Apples/Donut Game

Valdez Youth Court once again organized and put on the popular fundraiser basketball game between the Valdez Police Department and Valdez School District. The community came out to the High School Friday night to watch the game and purchase Krispy Kreme donuts to support Youth Court in Valdez. The Police Department Team emerged victorious.

Valdez Senior Derek Berg played for the School District team and had a monster block against Wyatt Duncan. While Duncan did not make this shot, he did play well enough throughout the contest to win game MVP.

Valdez Fly-In hopes to build on success of last year’s event

Last year, more than 200 airplanes made the spectacular flight to Valdez for the Fly In and Airshow. The Fly-In website and facebook page get constant traffic and YouTube videos like the one of Frank Knapp’s record 13 foot take off and 10 foot landing receive millions of views. Last year, event organizers hastily added a Facebook Live Stream before the event and ended up with over 96,777 viewers worldwide. The largest airshow in the world, EAA Airventure in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, holds a “Valdez STOL” demonstration, using Valdez rules so the Valdez Fly-In has really made a name for itself and it’s competition in the bush flying community. This year, the Valdez Fly-In group plans to stream the event live, so our little town will have thousands and perhaps tens of thousands of people joining us for the event May 11th through 13th.

Valdez raises money for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Sam Owen, Ryan Sims, and Ryan McCormick raised $19,110.00 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through the Scott Firefighter Stair Climb. The three firefighters solicited donations, held a raffle and raised $2,175 in the KVAK Cake Auction. The three Valdez Firefighters climbed the Columbia Center in downtown Seattle. It takes 69 flights of stairs and 1,356 steps to reach the highly acclaimed observation deck overlooking the City. And the firefighters must complete the climb in full structural turnout gear while on-air.

In 2018, the event featured 2,000 firefighters from over 330 different departments and eight countries. Sims made the climb is a little over 15 minutes. Fatra Allen, Steve Husband and Grace Huhndorf didn’t climb in Seattle, but faced the myriad of fundraising and logistics on the ground that made the event successful for the Valdez firefighters.

KVAK Kids Birthday Club Sponsor Opportunity

KVAK is excited to share with you a community project: the Kids Birthday Club for the children in our community. The Club will be open to students in Kindergarten through 5th grade and we will write custom radio spots to air on their special day and include their birthday in our e-mail newspaper.

Businesses and organizations have the opportunity to sponsor by the month. The cost is $199 per month.

The sponsor for each month will be included in every radio spot and listed on our website. We anticipate writing and recording an average of eight to ten birthday announcements each month (of course numbers will vary due to the nature of this project).

If you’d like to sponsor, please complete the form below. As months are confirmed, we will remove them from the form.

Thank you!
