Real ID available in Alaska beginning January 2nd

Starting January 2nd, 2019, the Alaska Department of Motor Vehicles will start issuing Real ID compliant state IDs and driver’s licenses. Residents won’t be required to show them until October 2020 but are being encouraged to apply for a Real ID sooner than later.

The Real ID application requires more documentation than previous Alaska driver’s licenses. View the list HERE to see what you’ll need.

The cost is also higher: $40 for a driver’s license and $35 for a state ID. On the plus side, they will be valid for eight years and can be renewed online every other time, meaning you’ll only
