The Valdez Municipal Code Chapter 9.38 requires that all persons who trap within the Valdez City limits register with the Valdez Police Department. The Valdez Animal Control Office will be conducting a trapping safety class and facilitate the registration process for the upcoming trapping season. At the time of registration trappers must show proof of completion of an approved trapping safety class and possess a valid trapper’s license issued by the State of Alaska.
All trappers must register with the Valdez Animal Control Office prior to trapping within the city limits.
The required safety class will provide pertinent information on trapping safety, and a map of areas within the city limits where trapping is allowed or prohibited. For more information, please contact Rich Long, Animal Control Officer, at 835-2286, or by email to rlong@ci.valdez.ak.us.
Despite budget woes at the statewide level and oil companies cutting back with the decrease in oil production, the City of Valdez budget is healthy and City Administration is continuing to hire employees and increase spending. The City Budget is funded by local property tax. Payments from the oil industry comprise the lions share of the local government budget.
The Valdez interim City Manager proposed, and the City Council approved, additional staffing for the City of Valdez less than a year ago and now current City Manager Dennis Ragsdale is proposing to add positions to the management team at the City. In 2014 the City of Valdez budget included just over 10 million dollars for personnel costs. More than 14 million dollars in personnel costs are projected in the current 2017 budget. “The City currently has 11 direct reports to me”, said Ragsdale. “That’s really an unmanageable amount of people”. In addition to the proposal to hire a Public Services Administrator and a Community Development Administrator to report directly to the City Manager and assist with management of department heads, Ragsdale is proposing to hire a Code Enforcement Officer, a Full-time Events Coordinator and an Economic Development Coordinator to replace a consultant currently used by the city.

(10-24-16) – Buccaneer sports had an eventful weekend while hosting the annual VHS “Throw Down In Snow Town” Wrestling Tournament. This year the VHS wrestling team had six student athletes who made it past the first day of matches and advanced to the next day. Out of the Valdez athletes, sophomore Oceana Holt walked away with top honors. Holt had an impressive performance winning 1st place in the 152 pound girls division. VHS junior Orion Heller had an exceptional performance as well, winning 3rd place in the 132 pound weight division. The wrestlers now look to have a good performance at the “King of the Mountain” tournament in Seward this weekend.
