All-State Music Festival

This weekend is the annual All-State Music Festival. The festival is an event where high school musicians audition months in advance to participate as members of a select statewide band, choral or orchestra music ensemble. This year four VHS students were selected to participate in the Festival, Gabby Franklin (choir), Hali Baczuk (choir), Isaac Fannin (choir), and Rylee Norris (band). The students will travel up to Anchorage this Wednesday and take part in two days of rehearsal at East Anchorage High School to prepare for the gala concert on Saturday. The concert will start at 6pm Saturday and will be held in the West Anchorage High School auditorium.

Lady Bucs Take 4th at State

Last weekend the VHS volleyball team concluded their season at the three day 3A state tournament in Anchorage. Valdez qualified for the tournament by winning 1st place in the Aurora Conference Tournament. On the first day of competition the Lady Bucs had a strong start beating the number two seed Kotzebue Huskies. Later in the day, Valdez had their second match of the day against the Mt. Edgecumbe Lady Braves. Unfortunately, the Lady Bucs weren’t able to claim a victory and lost. On Friday morning Valdez defeated the Monroe Catholic Rams to advance to the next round of the tournament. After beating Monroe, Valdez went on to face Grace Christian School later on that day. Valdez lost that game and finished 4th in the tournament.

Friday, November 11th is Veteran’s Day

November 11, 1918 was the day fighting ceased in World War I and officially became a holiday called Armistice Day. In November 1819, President Wilson declared, “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”

After World War II, the name of the holiday was changed to Veteran’s Day, to ensure all veterans would be honored on this holiday.
