Eric Auten of Valdez dominated the community racers division using classic technique in the 7k event and was the overall winner of the Town Ski Race Saturday. VHS senior Rylee Norris finished 1st in the high school division with an outstanding classic race. Norris was followed closely by junior Ben Swanson who also had a strong classic. All racers made great efforts, and showed great energy and enthusiasm in the freestyle event and finished. During the event a total of $100 was made to assist the team in purchasing wax. Coach Pete Toye said the team wishes to sincerely thank all community racers. The next town race will be on December 31st starting at 10:30am at Cato Bridge—registration at 10:15. All town races are freestyle and skiers can choose their techniques.
Last weekend was the 3A State Wrestling tournament hosted at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage. This year Valdez had two wrestlers qualify to compete in the two day tournament, Alisa and Orion Heller. Orion qualified for state by winning 2nd place in the regional tournament the week prior. Alisa, who had one 1st place in her region, finished the two day tournament with a 4th place finish in Anchorage at the 120 pound weight division.
The VHS wrestling team had two wrestlers qualify for the state tournament this past weekend at regions, Alisa and Orion Heller. Alisa Heller placed first with another dominant performance and a second round pin in the finals. Orion made it to the finals and lost in a sudden victory over time. Orion had to quickly wrestle for true second where he clinched his spot at the state tournament with a fall. The state tournament is scheduled for this Friday, December 16th through Saturday, December 17th at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage.
Jacob Porritt made his way to the finals suffering a tough loss and a concussion. Unfortunately, due to the concussion Porritt had to be pulled from the tournament resulting in a medical forfeit and falling one match shy of becoming a state qualifier.
JT Ginn wrestled a great tournament with a tough loss while fighting back in the consolation semifinals. Ginn fought all the way to the bitter end and I couldn’t be more proud. JT has grown significantly as a wrestler from last year to this year and with some off season training we look forward to his opportunity to shine at the state tournament.
