City of Valdez looking to build new fire station, offices, expand storage facility

During the November 22nd meeting, the Council granted approval for Administration to negotiate the purchase price of 14.88 acres known as Lot 2, Sleepy Hollow for development of proposed City facilities including a new fire station, city/agency storage (including Police impound) and snow storage. Tonight, the Council will discuss the idea of purchasing 6.8 acres to 8.08 acres of the parcel which is located in the area where Harborview used to be located. This is the location of the newly established Karen Davey Stewart Memorial Community Garden. Under this new scenario, the land would be used for a new fire station. If the larger portion of land is purchased, the City is considering the idea of subdividing the land and putting it out to sale. The City Staff is also recommending purchasing land adjacent to the newly built Maintenance Shops across the street from Public Works and adding to the existing school and city maintenance buildings along West Egan Drive.

Valdez Town Ski Race #2

Courtesy Pete Toye

Seven community skiing enthusiasts joined twelve VHS ski team members to welcome the new year in true Nordic style at the Valdez Town series Race #2. This New Year’s Eve event was a 7K freestyle  race staged on great snow and a bright, clear, winter morning just as it should be!  Ben Swanson took the overall spot, Rylee Norris led the women’s division, and Ben Stolen was the top community finisher. Such great local competition motivates our team to give that “extra” and benefits each racer immensely as we prepare for the heart and soul of our season starting this weekend at our own Valdez Invite. We are most appreciative of the community involvement which has helped all our skiers get a little faster and more competitive each time out!

The next community race opportunity will be this Saturday, 01/07/17 @ 2:00 in the 5.4K open  freestyle race starting at USCG Housing. The next Valdez Town Series Race will be held on 01/21/17 beginning @ 10:30 @ Cato Bridge.

Valdez City Council voted to appoint Ms. Sheri Pierce as interim city manager on Tuesday evening

????????????????????????????????????

After returning from an executive session during their regular meeting on Tuesday evening, Valdez City Council voted unanimously to appoint City Clerk Sheri Pierce to the position of interim city manager. Pierce’s interim appointment begins January 4, 2017; the day after current city manager Dennis Ragsdale’s resignation becomes effective.

“Having served over twenty-seven years in the City of Valdez clerk’s office, Ms. Pierce understands the unique needs and challenges facing our community”, stated Mayor Ruth E. Knight. “With a proven track record of outstanding performance, Sheri will provide solid leadership as council works to appoint a permanent city manager.”

Pierce has served in municipal government for over thirty-five years. Hired as Valdez deputy city clerk in 1989, she was then appointed Valdez city clerk in 1994. Prior to moving to Alaska, Pierce worked twelve years as a technician for the Portland Police Department in Oregon.

Pierce holds the designation of Master Municipal Clerk from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC), the profession’s highest certification. She currently serves as one of two IIMC Region IX directors, representing municipal clerks from Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, and California on the organization’s board of directors.

An active member of the Alaska Association of Municipal Clerks (AAMC), Pierce served in a multitude of leadership roles over the past fifteen years, including president, past president, education director, and chair for several different committees. In 2009, AAMC named Pierce the Alaska Municipal Clerk of the Year.

Ms. Pierce’s full resume is available upon request from the city’s public information office.

Under Chapter 2.04.020 of Valdez municipal code, the city clerk may simultaneously hold the position of city manager if authorized by city council. A formal amendment to Pierce’s contract will appear on the January 3, 2017 regular city council agenda.
