VHS Boys Take 3rd in Dean Cummings Invite

The boys varsity team competed in the Dean Cummings Invitational this past weekend. The Bucs first game of the tournament was against Galena last Thursday. Valdez started the game off hot, finishing the first quarter up 20-8. Never giving up the lead, the Bucs continued to outscore the Hawks in the remaining three quarters winning 67-36. Valdez was led by senior Seth Auble who finished the game with a double-double on 19 points 10 rebounds. Also contributing to the victory was sophomore Bennett Hinkle who scored 15 points on 4-6 shooting.

On Friday, the Buccaneers next opponent in the tournament was the Monroe Catholic Rams. This matchup proved to be a challenge for Valdez. After three quarters of play the Bucs were ahead 40-32. In the 4th and final quarter the Rams stepped up defensively causing turnovers on the offensive end for Valdez. Rams outscored the Bucs 17-6, giving Monroe the victory winning 49-46.

On Saturday, Valdez played their final game of the tournament for a 3rd place finish against the Bethel Warriors. The two teams matched up well in the first two quarters and finished the half tied 26-26. In the 3rd quarter, the Bucs began to pull ahead only allowing the Warriors to score five points. Lady Bucs Finish 2nd in Nikiski Tournament

The VHS girls varsity team traveled to Nikiski for a tournament this past weekend.  Last Thursday the Lady Bucs competed in their first game, their opponent the Kodiak Bears. Valdez won easily by a score of 53-30 to advance in the tournament. They were led to victory by junior Bobbi Mott who scored 32 points on 12-18 shooting, tallied 14 rebounds, grabbed 3 steals and got 4 blocks.

On Friday, the Lady Bucs played the Service Panthers. Valdez outscored the Panthers in each quarter and stepped up defensively recording 18 steals for the game as a team. Mott led the team in scoring and rebounding with 17 points and 14 rebounds. On the defensive side, the Lady Bucs looked to senior Tori Franciosi who tallied 6 steals for the game and also scored 14 points.

In the championship game the Lady Bucs competed against the hometown Nikiski Bulldogs. The Bulldogs  defense caused numerous problems for the Lady Bucs throughout the game. At the end of the first quarter, Nikiski led 21-6. In the 2nd quarter Valdez diminished the deficit and finished the half only down by 8. In the next two quarters the Bulldogs kept up their defensive pressure forcing turnovers and contesting shots that allowed to them to win 47-30. The Lady Bucs placed 2nd in the tournament. Mott once again led Valdez in scoring with 15 points, but wasn’t enough in the final game with the Lady Bucs shooting 7-31 for the game and gaving up 18 turnovers. The next game for the Lady Bucs will be next week as they travel to Seward for another weekend of tournament basketball.

PRESS RELEASE

Valdez Fire and Police Departments responded to a structure fire on Gulkana Street early Thursday afternoon.

At approximately 2:49 p.m. Thursday, Valdez Fire and Police Dispatch received a report of a fire in a residence on the corner of Gulkana Street and Meals Avenue.

Emergency responders arrived on scene at approximately 2:52 p.m. and discovered an active fire in a trailer home at 100 Gulkana. Firefighters verified residents in the involved and neighboring homes were evacuated and began work to extinguish the fire.

One adult male reported being present in the involved home when the fire began. He and a large black dog escaped without injuries. Two additional small dogs present in the trailer remain unaccounted for and are presumed deceased.

At approximately 5:12 p.m., Fire Department personnel deemed the fire under control and began overhaul efforts. The trailer involved in the incident was determined to be uninhabitable and its residents indicated they would stay with family for the evening.

Minor damage occurred to the neighboring trailer home.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

City officials contacted the American Red Cross and a local ARC representative coordinated assistance for the couple displaced by the incident. Additionally, several local businesses offered the couple assistance with shelter, clothing, and supplies. The Valdez Chapter of Alaska State Firefighters Association also provides monetary assistance to individuals whose homes are lost during a fire.

Due to cold temperatures during the response, heavy ice now covers the intersection of Meals Ave and Gulkana Street. Once Fire Department overhaul efforts are complete, City Streets crews will place sand at the intersection. Those driving in the area are urged to transit slowly and with extreme caution.

Truck Rollover on Richardson Tuesday

On Tuesday, January 17th, 2017, a Big State Logistics double trailer truck had the rear trailer overturn at mile 17.5 on the Richardson Highway. Valdez Fire and Police responded to the scene and the Richardson Highway was closed for just over two hours on Tuesday.

According to City Clerk Allie Ferko, there was a minor diesel spill and the Big State hazmat team responded and emptied the tank before turning the overturned trailer upright.
