Lady Bucs Dominate Eielson Ravens

The Lady Bucs played at home this past weekend against the Eielson Ravens. Valdez started off hot in their first game on Friday. In the first quarter the Lady Bucs held the Ravens scoreless while going on a 19 point run. For the rest of the game Valdez showed a strong defensive presence, holding Eielson to single digit scoring for the remaining three quarters. Valdez won 50-8 and was led by Carlee Fleming with 14 points and also led the team in rebounding with 8. On Saturday, Valdez had a commanding 60-18 win over the Ravens. This time led by sophomore Sydney Johnson with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Jade Watts also contributed to the scoring 8 points and distributing the ball tallying 8 assists as well as 5 rebounds and 5 steals. The Lady Bucs will travel this weekend to play the Delta Huskies on Thursday, and the Galena Hawks on Friday and Saturday.

Bucs Down Ravens

This past weekend the boys high school basketball team faced off at home against the Eielson Ravens. On Friday the boys varsity had a solid victory winning 58-44. Senior Seth Auble led the way for Valdez scoring 21 points on 8-8 shooting and also had 8 rebounds. The beginning of the game on Saturday proved to be more difficult for Valdez. At the end of two quarters of play Eielson led Valdez 26-20. In the 3rd quarter however, the Bucs held Eielson scoreless for more than 7 minutes and went on a 20 point run. In the 4th quarter, the Ravens couldn’t erase their deficit and lost 63-43. Sophomore Bennett Hinkle led the Bucs scoring 20 points and grabbing five rebounds. The Bucs will travel to Delta to play the Huskies Thursday. The team will travel to Galena to play the Hawks on Friday and Saturday.

SBDC Business Class and Advising Survey

 

The City of Valdez has invited the Alaska Small Business Development Center to conduct a series of business classes and provide business advising to businesses in Valdez over the next 12 months. If you run a business, plan to start one, or are just considering the idea for a business, the City would like you to take this survey. The survey results will help provide the maximum benefit to the business community as the feedback will be used to determine class topics and the best possible scheduling. The survey will remain open through March 3.

Levitation 49 is hosting the Second Annual Chugach Fat Bike Bash in Valdez March 1st through 5th. The Bash is a family- and spectator-friendly fat bike rodeo and the debut of the Fat Freeride World Championships. Under-18 Junior Divisions will be available for all events. Events include Community Costume Bike Parade, Northern Lights Harbor Race, Ursa Major Street Party, Revelate XC, Hoodoo Fat Bike Rodeo, and a Dance Party.

Seven Valdez High School students to compete in Academic Decathlon

140 high school students representing 12 high schools from across the state will converge in Anchorage in hopes of out-smarting their competitors at the 32nd Annual Alaska Academic Decathlon, including seven Valdez students. Students have been diligently training for months to prepare for the rigorous, all-academic competition, which showcases some of the best of Alaska’s bright young minds at all levels of academic abilities.

Students competing from Valdez High School are:

Taking place at the Hilton Anchorage Hotel from Feb. 22 – 25, the Academic Decathlon is an opportunity for high school students to showcase their academic knowledge in an individual and team competition. Each student competes in 10 events, including art, economics, essay, interview, language and literature, math, music, science, social science and speech. On Friday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. students will participate in the Super Quiz, a team competition featuring a relay of students working to answer the most questions correctly in three electrifying rounds. The Super Quiz is the Academic Decathlon’s only public event.

 

The Alaska Academic Decathlon is a nonprofit corporation developed to enhance knowledge-based skills and recognize the scholastic achievements of high school students of all academic abilities. Each nine-member team consists of students from all learning levels at their respective high school, including honor students (3.75-4.0 GPA), the scholastic division (3.0-3.74 GPA) and the varsity division (0.0-2.99 GPA). This year’s competition also includes high school students representing schools in the following school districts: Annette Island, Bering Strait, Craig City, Fairbanks North Star Borough, Galena City, Juneau, Ketchikan 21st Century Schools, Lower Yukon, and Roman Catholic Diocese of Fairbanks.

 

All teams must compete in local, regional and statewide competitions in order to advance to the national finals. The winning team from the Alaska Academic Decathlon will compete in the U.S. Academic Decathlon, held in Madison, Wisconsin, April 20 – 22, 2017. City Elections Approaching

NOTICE OF REGULAR MUNICIPAL AND SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION OF THE CITY OF VALDEZ

MAY 2, 2017

Notice is hereby given that pursuant to applicable law and ordinances (or Code of Laws of the City of Valdez) a general election will be held on MAY 2, 2017, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. to elect candidates for the following offices:

CITY COUNCIL: One (1) Vacancy to Serve a Three (3) Year Term

Two (2) Vacancies, Each to Serve a Two (2) Year Term

SCHOOL BOARD: Three (3) Vacancies, Each to Serve a Three (3) Year Term

One (1) Vacancy, to Serve a Two (2) Year Term

ELIGIBILITY OF CANDIDATES

City Council and City School Board:  Must be a qualified elector of Alaska who has been a resident of the City of Valdez for a period of not less than one year immediately preceding the date of filing.

NOMINATING PETITIONS

Nominating petitions for the offices of City Council and School Board may be obtained at the City Clerk’s Office. The first date to file a petition for office will be FEBRUARY 16, 2017. Final date for filing a nominating petition will be MARCH 16, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.

The following proposition will appear on the official ballot.

PROPOSITION NO. 1

Shall the City of Valdez Adopt a Local Option to Prohibit the Operation of Commercial Marijuana Establishments, Including the Following License Types:

A. A retail marijuana store:

A “retail marijuana store” means an entity registered to purchase marijuana from marijuana cultivation facilities, to purchase marijuana and marijuana products from marijuana product manufacturing facilities, and to sell marijuana and marijuana products to consumers.

B. A marijuana cultivation facility:

A “marijuana cultivation facility” means an entity registered to cultivate, prepare, and package marijuana and to sell marijuana to retail marijuana stores, to marijuana product manufacturing facilities, and to other marijuana cultivation facilities, but not to consumers.

C. A marijuana product manufacturing facility; and

A “marijuana product manufacturing facility” means an entity registered to purchase marijuana; manufacture, prepare, and package marijuana products; and sell marijuana and marijuana products to other marijuana product manufacturing facilities and to retail marijuana stores, but not to consumers.

D. A marijuana testing facility.

A “marijuana testing facility” means an entity registered to analyze and certify the safety and potency of marijuana.

YES

(“Yes” means that commercial marijuana establishments will be prohibited within the boundaries of the City of Valdez to include a 10 mile area within the adjacent unincorporated borough.)

NO

(“No” means that commercial marijuana establishments will be allowed in the city of Valdez as authorized and regulated in Chapter 5.06 of the Valdez Municipal Code.) 

PRECINCTS, POLLING PLACES

The City consists of three election precincts for all regular and special City elections.  The boundaries of these precincts are as follows:

Precinct #1: that portion of the City of Valdez which lies west of Hazelet Avenue.

Precinct #2: that portion of the City of Valdez which lies between Hazelet Avenue and a north/south line drawn through the point where Crooked Creek crosses the Richardson Highway (Salmon Turnaround).

Precinct #3: that portion of the City of Valdez which lies east of a north/south line drawn through the point where Crooked Creek crosses the Richardson Highway (Salmon Turnaround).

The polling places for these precincts shall be as follows:

Precinct #1: Teen Center

Precinct #2 City Council Chambers

Precinct #3 Robe River Subdivision Fire Station

A PERSON IS QUALIFIED TO VOTE WHO

1. Is a United States Citizen;

2. Is 18 years or older;

3. Has been a resident of the State of Alaska and the City of Valdez for 30 days immediately preceding the election;

4. Is registered 30 days prior to the election as required under Alaska Statutes 15.07 and is not registered to vote in another jurisdiction;

5. Is not disqualified under Article V of the State Constitution
