Boys Place 5th at State

The boys varsity team competed in 3A State Tournament this past weekend. The Bucs first game of the tournament was against the ACS Lions. Valdez stayed in control for most of the game outscoring the Lions in three of the four quarters, ultimately winning the game 68-56. Sophomore Logan Heckathorn was the standout offensive player for Valdez during the game leading the team in scoring with 17 points. CLICK HERE for full game stats.

On Friday, the Bucs competed against the Monroe Catholic Rams for a spot in the championship game. The Monroe defense held Valdez scoreless for the whole first quarter. In the second quarter the Bucs rallied back and ended the half with a score of 20-14 with Monroe leading. Going into the next half, Monroe was able to extend their lead to 31-22 going into the final quarter. Once again the Bucs responded with another scoring run where they had a two point lead over the Rams in the final minutes of the game. After some back and forth action from the teams in the final seconds of the game Monroe had a two point lead over Valdez. The Bucs received the ball for the last possession of the game for a chance to tie the game, but Monroe stole the ball on the inbound pass to win the game 42-40. With that loss, the Bucs played Saturday for their final game of the tournament. CLICK HERE for full game stats.
On Saturday, Valdez played the Barrow Whalers for 3rd place. After an even first two quarters of play, Barrow had a 27-25 lead over Valdez at the halftime. In the third quarter, the Whalers outscored the Bucs 19-11 and had an eight point lead going into the final quarter of play. In the final minutes of the game, Valdez went on another scoring run to try and close the gap. In the final seconds the Whalers were able to hold off the Bucs and won 57-56. That loss gave Valdez a 5th place finish for the tournament. At the conclusion of the tournament, Seth Auble was selected to the All-Tournament Team. The Bucs finish their season with a record of 20-8, and 10-7 in their conference. In addition, the boys received 2nd place in the Valdez Elks Tournament, as well as 2nd place in the regional tournament. The team now says goodbye to their graduating senior, Seth Auble. Lady Bucs Compete at State
Senior Tori Franciosi played her last game at the State Tournament
The VHS Varsity Girls basketball team competed in the 3A state basketball tournament last weekend in Anchorage. The Lady Bucs came into the tournament as the 7th overall seed for the tournament.
On Thursday the girls had their first game for the tournament against the Sitka Wolves. This proved to be a difficult matchup for Valdez. In the first quarter the Lady Bucs were outscored 27-4. Valdez wasn’t able to find a way around the Sitka defense which held them to single digit scoring for the remaining three quarters. The girls ended up losing 78-22. CLICK HERE for full game stats. With that loss Valdez then looked for a 4th place finish for the tournament.
On Friday, Valdez had to beat Grace Christian to earn a spot in the 4th place game. Once again the Lady Bucs had difficulty scoring throughout the game and lost 43-23. CLICK HERE for full game stats. Those two losses concluded the tournament run for the girls. They finished the year with a regular season record of 18-12 and finished 10-4 in their division. In addition, the Lady Bucs finished 1st place in the regional tournament. The team says goodbye to their graduating senior, Tori Franciosi.

Annual test of tsunami warning system test this Wednesday, Mar 29th

The State of Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHS&EM) will be standing up the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) on March 29th during the annual test of the Tsunami Warning System. Expect to hear the sirens and emergency broadcast system. Test will be cancelled in the event of seismic activity.

Multiple agencies to host an April public meeting in Valdez highlighting changes to FEMA flood mapping along the City of Valdez coastline, Lowe River, Robe River, Valdez Glacier Stream, and Mineral Creek.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the State of Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development will host a public meeting on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in the Valdez Civic Center to discuss draft FEMA flood map revisions for Valdez and explain what these revisions mean for property owners.
With advanced technology and better data, FEMA, in partnership with the State of Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development, recently issued preliminary flood maps for properties in Valdez. These revised maps depict the current risk of a base flood event, or the 1-percent-annual-chance of flood.
During the April public meeting, Valdez property owners and residents will have a chance to learn about the flood mapping process. Citizens will also have the opportunity to ask questions about how flood maps impact their property and community. The City of Valdez encourages property owners to examine the preliminary maps prior to the meeting. FEMA maps can be reviewed through an online portal link available at www.ci.valdez.ak.us/femafirm or in person at the City’s Community Development Department Office in City Hall.
Flooding is the nation’s most common and most expensive natural disaster. According to national statistics, homes inside high risk flood areas have a 26 percent chance of being damaged by flooding over the life of a 30-year mortgage, compared with a nine percent chance of sustaining fire damage.
