158 POUND HALIBUT CURRENTLY 3rd IN HALIBUT DERBY

VALDEZ, Alaska – Lupe Gonzales of Clint, Texas reeled in a 158 pound halibut on June 20th to get on the leader board in the Valdez Halibut Derby. Gonzales lives in Texas but fished Alaska when he was stationed in Alaska. This is the largest fish Gonzales has ever caught but he said he was afraid he was going to lose it. “It went around the anchor and my pole was bending and making a u turn”, Gonzales said. “It took 25 minutes to reel it in and this fish was taller than I was …and I’m six feet tall”. Gonzales is currently in 3rd place in the overall standings and won the 2nd place weekly prize. Gonzales said for him it was all about the experience and thrill of it. Gonzales did have a derby ticket and said getting his name on the leader board meant even more than the prizes. “If you’re going to go out, spend $10 and get a ticket. You’re crazy not to”, Gonzales said.

Tim Stadtmiller is still on top of the leader board with the 266.6 pound halibut he caught June 19th aboard the Dan Orion and Daniel Schmitz of Wasilla, Alaska is currently in 2nd place overall with the 176.6 pound halibut he caught June 12th aboard the Jamie Lynn.

According to Alaska Department of Fish and Game, halibut angling continues to be productive throughout Prince William Sound. Good weekend weather allowed anglers to get to the fishing grounds this past week. Rockfish angling is productive will small jigs near rocks reefs. Lingcod season will open July 1st.

Pink Salmon are expected to be available by the 4th of July weekend and should be in the Port of Valdez for the Annual Kids Pink Salmon Derby. The anticipated return of Pink Salmon to Port Valdez is 17.8 million. In addition to great fishing during the 4th of July, the City of Valdez will be hosting a 4th of July Celebration on Tuesday, featuring old fashioned kids games, a parade, community barbeque, live music and community s’mores roast. Most of the activities are free and open to the public

The silver salmon will be right on their tails, arriving in mid to late July. The Valdez Silver Salmon Derby starts July 22nd.

The Women’s Silver Salmon Derby is slated for August 12th with an opening ceremony Friday night. The theme of this year’s Women’s Derby is “Adventures on the High Seas” and there will be a group costume contest Friday night as well as live music and awards for the top 50 on Saturday night. Potential Flooding Warning

PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT

Potential Flooding Warning

For immediate release:  06/18/2017  9:00 p.m.

The City of Valdez received notice from Dr. Wolken at the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys that the Valdez Glacier Ice-Dam Lake formed early this year.

The lake, formed by run-off water pooling behind glacial formations, is located in the mountains above Valdez Glacier. When enough water pools behind the ice dam, the pressure causes the ice to rise, allowing the lake to drain down the mountain into the Valdez Glacier Lake and Valdez Glacier Stream. This is called an “outburst event” and may cause flooding and an increase of ice in the lake and stream.

Citizens recreating in or around the area should be aware that an outburst event and associated flooding is likely. “While the volume of the lake is currently smaller than last June, a substantial amount of water is dammed,” Dr. Wolken stated. “If the release is fast and efficient, it could produce higher flows in Valdez Glacier Stream.”

The City of Valdez encourages campers, kayakers, and boaters to use extra precautions while recreating in the area. Should an outburst event occur remember to move immediately to higher ground and avoid walking or driving through flood waters.

NEW LEADER TIPS THE SCALES AT 266.6 POUNDS

VALDEZ, Alaska – With just an hour left in the Halibut Hullabaloo tournament, a hefty halibut was weighed in for the Valdez Halibut derby. Tim Stadtmiller of Fairbanks, Alaska reeled in a 266.6 pound halibut Sunday, June 18th aboard the Dan Orion to win the 10 day tournament and take the lead in the regular derby. Stadtmiller wins the $1,000 cash prize and is in the running for the grand prize of $15,000 in the Valdez Halibut derby if his fish remains the largest through the end of the derby. A video interview with Stadtmiller can be found at: https://youtu.be/XWSnSt4TUuQ

Daniel Schmitz of Wasilla, who caught a 176.6 pound halibut June 12, drops to 2nd place in the overall standings but he did win the weekly 1st place prize as the derby week ends Saturday night and Stadtmiller’s fish was caught on Sunday. Stadtmiller is now in the lead for the weekly 1st place prize for week number five in the derby.

Last year, it was Jeff Leaverton of Madisonville, Louisiana who won the Halibut Hullabaloo and he won it with a 174.4 pound halibut. In the 2016 Valdez Halibut Derby, it was David Jamison who picked up a 253 pound halibut and the 1st place overall prize. Kim Steiger reeled in a 211 pounder in 2016 to take 2nd place and Leaverton took home 3rd place with that 174.4 pounder he caught during Halibut Hullabaloo.

According to Alaska Department of Fish and Game, halibut angling continues to be productive throughout Prince William Sound. The Lingcod season will be open July 1st and rockfish angling has been quite productive with small jigs near rocky reefs.

Pink salmon in Valdez should arrive in large numbers before the silvers and kids across the state are excited about that. While pinks can likely be caught July 4th weekend, there’s a Kids Pink Salmon Derby in Valdez Saturday, July 22nd when the fish are thick in the Port. Valdez Fisheries Development Association is estimating a return of 17.8 million pink salmon to Port Valdez this year, so there should be plenty to catch. The Kids Pink Salmon Derby is free and the first 200 kids to weigh in a fish get a free t-shirt. The top three fish in four different age divisions will win a prize. There’s a free family BBQ at the end of the Derby. More information can be found at www.valdezfishderbies.com.

In addition to great fishing during the 4th of July, the City of Valdez will be hosting a several events around town on Tuesday, the 4th of July. A Block Party downtown will feature old fashioned kid’s games, a parade, and community barbeque.
