GMS Second Quarter Super Huskies

Olivia – 6th grade

Olivia was selected by GMS staff as a Super Husky because of her leadership qualities. She humbly exudes confidence, is self-motivated, responsible, and friendly to all. Olivia takes her learning seriously and always submits top-quality work. She has a sense of civic duty and is a mover and shaker in student government. Olivia generously gives of her time and volunteers often, helping her classmates and school experience success. –Mrs. Keller

Ginger – 7th grade

I nominated Ginger Keller for the Super Husky Award because of her tireless effort in my Language Arts and Social Studies classes. Ginger consistently comes to class prepared and is never late with assignments. I believe she works hard at studying her spelling words and geography facts outside of class. During class, Ginger’s behavior is exemplary. Good job, Ginger. Keep up the good work! –Mr. Norris

Marshall – 8th grade

Marshall was nominated because he is a pleasant young man that always puts a smile on your face. He works well with others, is helpful towards his peers and does whatever it takes to create a positive atmosphere that staff and students enjoy. Marshall is also meticulous in the academic arena alway striving for excellence. He truly exemplifies the best of which GMS strives to create in its students! –Mr. Huston

VHS Weekend Wrap-Up – December 4, 2017

Wrestling:  (Coach Tyler Thompson):

Glennallen:

  • The wrestlers took to the mat for the last regular season tournament this past weekend in Glennallen. The Bucs wrestled some great matches and got an idea of some final adjustments we need to make for the upcoming regional tournament. Unfortunately we were unable to get anyone on the podium this week however, we have one final week to make that leap next weekend.
  • Standout Match: Winning 21-19 in overtime Jana Allen picked up her first victory in the 220 lb boys division. I wanted her to go out an score as many points as she could and she sure delivered!

Upcoming Regional Tournament:

As we approach the end of the season it is amazing to see how far our team has come. We have a lot of wrestlers that are new to the sport and it is great to see that they have made it this far.

Going into the regional tournament the Bucs will have to place in the top 2 in order to move on to the state tournament. The great thing is that every wrestler starts with a clean slate coming into this tournament, anyone can claim their spot on top of the podium. We plan to have a great week of practice and prepare our team mentally for the tournament ahead. As far as I am concerned, our goal is to get all our wrestlers to the state tournament. There are no guarantee champions, every match is a new battle with an unpredictable outcome. I will be happy to see all of our wrestlers leave it all on the mat knowing they gave it everything they had. If we focus on this, qualifying shall take care of itself.

Success is not measured by what you accomplish, but by the opposition you have encountered, and the courage with which you have maintained the struggle against overwhelming odds.

-Orison Swett Marden

Nordic Ski:   (Coaches Mel Koontz & Timi Miner):

Colony Ski Meet was cancelled this past weekend due to insufficient snow on the Valleys trails. The team will head to Anchorage this weekend for the Lynx Loppet Invitational Ski Meet.

Boys Basketball:  (Coach Todd Wegner)

It is with much excitement that the Valdez Boys Basketball program welcomes the Community of Valdez to the 2017 – 2018 basketball season!

Our staff, which consists of Todd Wegner, Bart Hinkle and Lee Chadwick are honored to have the privilege of working with these young men. We look forward to creating a positive experience for our players, their parents, the community, and our school.

The team is ready for another exciting season on the new hardwood!  The players have invested a lot of time, energy, and effort in the off season and are excited and eager to compete.

Valdez High School is rich in tradition with strong value placed on building the character of our students. Our team has agreed on and will be focusing on five core values this season. Accountable, Appreciative, Competitive, Encouraging and Unselfish.

Participating in athletics at Valdez High School accents our student-athlete’s abilities both academically and outside of our school.  We are very proud to be part of the Valdez community and we hope you feel the same!

The players and coaches would like to thank the administration, parents, community for all their continued support.

The 2017-18 VHS girls basketball season began 11/29 with 22 young ladies trying out. This season the ladies are hoping to continue their run through the Aurora conference and claim their 4th title in as many years and continue their streak with a 6th consecutive trip to state.

We are is looking forward to a great season with a tremendous group of young ladies.

Cheerleading:  (Coach Tina Fifarek)

2017/18 Cheer

This season sees a change in coaching from one head coach to three – Tina Fifarek, Emily Skilbred & Shania Fifarek, along with volunteer coach Jen Reiswig, and manager Janaea Koch.  The final team will be decided on Monday after three days of teaching cheer, dance, jumps and motions, along with seeing how the kids interact with and assist each other.  Also in consideration is coachability and attitude.  This season there are 11 girls trying out.  We look forward to a great season of Buccaneer Cheer.
