Girl’s JV Basketball games vs Delta

Friday Feb. 2nd Valdez. 40 Delta 29 Marianne Prax & Ally Seiber each with 9 pts.

Saturday    3rd Valdez  37 Delta 29 Reese King 12 pts.

Both days girls played a tough Delta team who played a tight Zone defense on us and kept us from scoring much.  We played a tough man defense the whole game and won with good ball control at the end of the game. Next weekend we travel to Reddington for their eight team tournament.

Friday, February 2nd (vs. Delta Huskies)

The first half of Friday’s game was closely contested, if not particularly sharp.  Despite modest execution on both ends of the floor, the Buccaneers took a lead of 29-24 going into halftime.

After re-grouping during halftime, the Bucs came out and put on a dominant display for the home crowd, outscoring the Huskies 52-26 during the second half – including a 30 point outburst in the fourth quarter alone-, en route to an 81-50 Aurora Conference victory.

All 12 rostered players played significant minutes in the contest, and all of them contributed statistically – including 11 different players in the scoring column.  Four Buccaneer players scored double-figures, led by Jalen Freeman with 15 points.  Raymond Martel led the team with rebounds, finishing with 6.  The Buccaneers defense pressured Delta into committing 18 turnovers, and also successfully drew 4 offensive fouls (2 each by Tyler Mann and Aidan Hinkle).

The Bucs outscored the Huskies in each quarter, and shot a scintillating 62% (30-for-48) from the field, including 8 of 14 from behind the 3-point arc.

Saturday, February 3rd (vs. Delta Huskies)

The Bucs were able to carry the momentum gained from Friday’s second half into Saturday’s game, jumping out to a 16-6 first quarter lead, then a 36-12 halftime advantage.  A sustained Buccaneer effort throughout the second half led the Bucs to a 64-45 win.

The Bucs were led in scoring and rebounding by Bennett Hinkle (16 points, 6 rebounds) and Logan Heckathorn (10 points, 6 rebounds).  The Bucs defense forced the Huskies into 24 turnovers and limited them to 7 total offensive rebounds.  Kyle Sodergren snatched 4 steals and drew a bone-crushing offensive foul.  All 12 rostered players played – with 11 of them garnering a rebound during the contest.

Notes:

Valdez has beaten Delta the last four contests (dating back to last year’s Aurora Conference tournament – in Delta) by an average margin of 20.25 points.

The two Aurora Conference victories pushed the Buccaneer conference record to 6-0 this year, with four conference games remaining.  The Bucs currently have a 13-2 record, having won 10 straight.  They look to extend their winning streak beginning Thursday evening, as they take on the Seward Seahawks in their first game of the 41st Valdez Elks Tournament.

Boys JV Basketball Games:  Coach Lee Chadwick

It was good for us to play a tough Delta team at home this weekend. Playing in front of a hometown crowd is always gratifying for the boys.  Although we won both games, it was most gratifying to see all of our players contributing in these wins.

On Friday night, we won with a score of 62-52.  Although we jumped out early in the first quarter, we began to settle for early 3 point attempts on offense followed by a lack of intensity on the defense end. The second quarter was the only quarter they matched us in, with us winning the 3rd and 4th quarters as well. Jona Turner had 15 points on 55% shooting.

On Saturday, we went with different lineups for most of the game, focusing on team defensive integrity. Our goal is always to keep an opposing team under 40 points. We met this goal, winning at a score of 45-40. Although our shooting percentage was the lowest we have had this year, our defense held the line and predicated the win. Doug Cummins was a force in the paint with 10 points (55% shooting) and 6 rebounds in only 13 minutes.

This weekend was a great lead in to our tournament this next week at Redington in Wasilla.

Town Race #4

February 3, 2018

The Valdez Buccaneers Nordic Ski Team hosted the last Town Race for the season on Saturday.  The team skied a 10 kilometer classic race.  Community members had a choice of classic or skate technique.  It was a chilly start at Cato Bridge.  Eric Auten finished first with a time of 35:52, but Senior Ben Swanson was hot on his heels finishing in 35:38.  Sarah Hinstad chose to skate and placed third with a time of 41:43.  Will Stark cruised in at 43:25.  Senior Josten Carlson has been working on his double poling technique and finished fifth in 47:48.  Skiing newbie Tolgonai Nasipbek-kyzy smashed her first 10K and finished in 1:05:20 and still had a smile on her face at the end.  Junior Rowen Miller also crushed her first 10K, finishing in 1:08:10.

The trails were freshly groomed and in prime condition for skiing.  Cold temperatures make for slower snow, making the athletes work a little harder.  Impressive finishes on slower snow.  The team heads to Boroughs next week for their last regular season meet.  Come out and join us for more community races coming soon!

Popular HHES 5th Grade Field Trip Fundraiser

The 5th grade students of Hermon Hutchens Elementary School took to the streets to sell Papa Murphy’s Pizza and Krispy Kreme donuts in an effort to raise funds to take a class trip to the Seward Sea Life Center in May. The students sold 292 pizzas and 129 dozen donuts. This should definitely help them in their quest to pay for the three-day trip that involves transportation in a tour bus, a ride on a train and spending the night at the Sea Life Center in Seward.

GMS Wrestling – February 5th 2018

Wrestling – Coach Tyler Thompson

We had a great weekend of wrestling with some great improvement by each wrestler.

Kyle Henderson and Jondel Toro brought home some hardware this weekends.

Kyle placed first at 160 with three dominating pins. In his finals match he led by a score of 20-2 before picking up the fall. If he would have let the kid off his back Kyle would have won by technical fall (up by 15 points) but Kyle dug deep and picked up a fall instead.

Jondel placed third at 84 lbs battling his way back after a first round loss.

Michael (3-2): wrestled great and did a great job of making adjustments correcting mistakes throughout the day.

William (1-2): wrestled tough and picked up a pin to end the day

McKennan (0-4): wrestled hard and when he came off the mat after a loss he focused on the things he needed to work on, not the fact that he lost. I am glad he didn’t let the loss consume his thoughts

Theron (0-4): lost some very close matches and knows exactly what caused him to lose those matches. Stayed very positive and optimistic about his ability to improve.

The team is doing a great job of focusing on improving their skills to get better after each match as opposed to worrying about if they won or not.

It was a great weekend and we had a lot of fun. I look forward to seeing their progression throughout the year.
