Coach Becky Walker said the VHS track team had an awesome weekend with many kids placing in events. She said almost everyone on the team set personal records this weekend.

Youth Soccer Camp coming to Valdez June 18th through 22nd

Challenger Sports is coming back to Valdez June 18th through the 22nd to host Soccer camp for kids age 3 to 16 years old.

First Kicks        3 to 4 years old –  8am to 9am

MiniSoccer     4 to 6 years old – 1 to 2:30pm

Half-Day         7 to 10 years old – 9:15 to 12:15pm

Half-Day         11 to 14 years old – 1pm to 4pm

Full-Day          9 to 16 years old – 9:15am to 12:15pm / 1 to 4pm

New study of fatal crashes related to alcohol and drugs

A new study based on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is now available. The study analyzes information from 2007 through 2016 (the latest year available) and shows which drunk and drugged driving threats have increased across the United States.

Findings specific to Alaska:

-Alaska ranks 13h in the country with the most alcohol-related fatal car accidents

-There was also an increase of 3.5% in police-reported alcohol-related deaths in the same time frame

-Methamphetamine causes the highest number of traffic fatalities in Alaska

VHS Weekend Wrap-Up – May 14, 2018

This past weekend the Track and Field team competed at the Palmer Invite.  It was a cold, rainy, windy meet, but the Buccaneers did a fantastic job.

In the High Jump Kassi Howard took third place with a jump of 4’10” and Destiny Gray finished 5th with a jump of 4’6”.  For the boys, Dustin Woods also took third place with a 5’8” jump and Kyler LaBonte jumped 5’6” for 5th.

Owen Chadwick and Jade Watts both had fantastic 400m races.  Owen ran a personal best in the finals at 52.79 seconds.  Jade ran her best of the season during finals for a 1:03.77.  Owen took 4th place overall and Jade took 5th.

Hayden Howard set a new personal record in the 200m at 25:34 seconds.

Kalin Woods ran the 1600m with a new personal record or 5:01.66.

In the 100m Hurdles Destiny Gray had a season record at 20.44 and Marianne Prax and Savannah Cockerham both set personal records at 20.98 and 23.45 respectively.

In the boys 110m Hurdles Dustin Woods ran a 20.33, Jeffrey Prevost ran a 20.74 and Logan Anderson ran a 22.43.

In the 300m Hurdles Destiny Gray set a personal record at 55.73, Savannah Cockerham also had a personal record at 1:02.25 and Marianne Prax ran a 1:04.94.  For the boys, both Jeffrey Prevost and Logan Anderson set personal records at 52.72 and 54.48 respectively.

In Long Jump Sophia Palomar and Savannah Cockerham both set personal records at 12’8” and 12’02” respectively. Wyatt Mehlbburg also had his best jump of the season.

In relays, the girls ran the 4X100 in 56.49 and the 4X200 in 1:59.12.

The boys 4X100 time was 48:58, and they ran the 4X200 1:45.10 despite interference from another team causing Kyle Sodergren to have to run most of his leg with only one shoe!

The boy also had an impressive 4X400 time at 3:54.97 and 4X800 runners finished with a 10:19.23.

The Palmer Invite also includes a “Throwers 4X100 Relay”.  Throwers Luke Baczuk, Gaspar Deleon, Logan Anderson and Stan Morales represented Valdez with great enthusiasm and style with a 1:01.14 finish.

In Shot Put Stan Morales threw 28’, Gaspar Deleon threw 27”07”, Brenner Wilson threw 22’09” and Wyat Mehlberg threw 22’07.5”.  Hunter Hoppe threw 26’10.25”

And in Discus Luke Baczuk threw 70’07”, Stan Morales threw 76”06”, Brenner Wilson threw 72’07” and  Gaspar DeLeon threw 65’02”.  For the girls, Hunter Hoppe threw 45’05”.

This next weekend the Bucs will be competing at the Region III meet in Houston.

Valdez Fly-In & Air Show brings huge international audience with live streaming of the STOL Competition

For the first time ever, the Valdez Fly-In streamed various events live, allowing viewers from all over the globe to catch a glimpse of the excitement we enjoy locally. The STOL (short takeoff landing) competition was one of the events streamed live and so far it has been viewed over 61,000 times.

Viewer locations include Brazil, Russia, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and many locations in North America.

Valdez High School Musicians Receive Top Honors at State Solo and Ensemble

Seventeen band and choir students from Valdez High School attended the ASAA State Solo and Ensemble Music Festival and all returned with at least one superior rating.  Students from 56 high schools from across Alaska participated in the showcase of vocal and instrumental performances at the UAA Campus last weekend.

In order to attend the event, students must qualify at a regional event which Valdez attended, the Aurora Music Festival,  at Grace Christian High School a month ago. Fifteen Valdez events moved on to State competition.

Solos and ensembles are adjudicated and critiqued by professional musicians and those that are deemed excellent in preparation, musicianship, and presentation in every way are given a “Superior” rating.  The following students received superiors:

Schools who attend with ten or more students, 1A through 4A enrollment, were eligible for entry into the Academic Award competition, as well.  Valdez High School received the award at a Command Performance Concert at East High Auditorium on Friday night. The Valdez students received the award for an average GPA of 3.828.  

 

VHS Weekend Wrap-Up – May 7, 2018

5/4/18 Meet in Houston

 

The weather was icy cold and wind was fierce and biting this weekend in Houston but the indomitable Buccaneers had a great meet competing against 18 other 3A and 4A teams.

-Owen Chadwick ran a personal best in the 100m in 11.75 seconds and finished 8th overall.  He is currently ranked 3rd in our region. He had another personal best in the 400m at 54.16 for a 4th place overall finish.

-Kyler LaBonte high jumped 5’8” for a personal record and a 4th place finish. In the 100m Kyler also had a personal record of 12.52.

-Kalin Woods set personal records in both the 800m and 1600m at 2:18.05 and 5:03.62  respectively.

-Hayden Howard had a great race in the 200m with a 25.46.

-The boys 4X100 team of Hayden Howard, Kyler LaBonte, Kyle Sodergren, and Owen Chadwick placed 5th with a time of 48.72.

-The 4X200 team of Hayden Howard, Luke Baczuk, Kyle Sodergren, and Kyler LaBonte placed 7th with 1:43.59.

-The 4X400 team of Hayden Howard, Kalin Woods, Blue Dunsworth and Kyle Sodergren had a time of 4:00.81 and finished 8th overall.

-Stan Morales threw a 29’2.25 in Shot Put and 88’3” in Discus.

-Chase Randal threw a personal best of 29’2” in Shot Put.

-Gaspar DeLeon had a Shot Put of 27’11.5”

-Brenner Wilson threw a personal best in the Discus at 70’1”

 

For the Lady Bucs:

-Kassi Howard finished 3rd in the High Jump with a jump of 5’8”.

-Jade Watts finished 5th place overall in the 400m with a 1:06.12 in prelims and a 1:06:55 in the finals.

-Katie Wadsworth sat a personal records in the 110m at 14.53 and a 32.15 in the 200m.

-Sophia Palomar ran the 100m in 14.91 and the 200m in 14.91.

-Marianne Prax ran the 100m Hurdles in a personal best time of 21.06 and the 300m Hurdles in 1:05.54 and Long jumped 11’10.5”.

-Savannah Cockerham set personal records in each of her events with a finish time of 25.32 in the 100m Hurdles a 1:02.99 in the 300m Hurdles and a 12’10.75” Long jump.

-Hunter threw 26’3.75” in Shot Put and 46’6” in Discus.

-The girl’s 4x 100 team of Jade Watts, Sophia Palomar, Katie Wadsworth, and Kassi Howard finished with a time of 55.92 and were 5th overall.

It’s truly exciting to see each team member not just working toward excellence personally, but helping, and coaching each other on better form and technique and then, ultimately better scores! This is a great group to work with!

 

Forensic Class Trip – Jenny Heckathorn

 

On Friday, May 4, Mrs. Heckathorn took 11 Students from her Forensics Class, on a field trip to the State Crime Lab in Anchorage. Students got to visit a variety of rooms designed for latent fingerprinting, studying blood spatter, processing DNA, learning how to use a comparison microscope, saw where ballistics are tested and got to see the confiscated gun collection.
