The 2018 Throw Down in Snow Town is in the books and was an awesome jam-packed weekend of wrestling. I would like to start by saying thank you to all those that helped make this weekend possible. Events as special as these take a community to make it possible. There were so many people behind the scenes that made this tournament one of the best in Alaska. To everyone that was involved, I can’t thank you enough for your hard work and dedication to helping support Valdez Wrestling!

We had eight wrestlers take to the mat this weekend at home with two wrestlers making it to the podium at the end of the tournament. Oceana Holt came in 2nd at 160 lbs in the girl’s division after losing a hard-fought match to the returning state runner-up from Barrow. Kyle Henderson suffered an early loss to the returning state champion but battled back on the backside with three straight pins that placed him at the 3rd place spot at 189 lbs.
We had a lot of successes this weekend that may not have shown on the scoreboard and we are excited to get back in the room and make the adjustments to take us to the next level. Next week we leave early on Thursday for “The King of the Mountain” Tournament in Seward. This will be another great tournament to get our wrestlers a lot of matches.

The Lady Bucs entered their last home game for the season with conference play against Eielson Friday and Saturday night. Playing in the JR. High Friday night due to the, “Throw Down in Snow Town” Wrestling Tournament, the Lady Bucs took the Eielson Ravens in three straight, 25-9, 25-5, and 25-14. Serving was effective with Kassi Howard leading off the Lady Bucs in game one with 10 serves, 4 aces, for 9 points while Sydney Johnson floored 3 kills. Game 2, Sydney Johnson held on for an impressive run of 16 serves with 8 aces and 15 points won with Kendal Wesenberg also serving 7 with 3 aces for 6 points. Ally Sieber had 2 attempts for 2 kills. Game three serving was led by Carlee Fleming with 6 serves, 2 aces, for 4 points won with both Macy Hansen and Sydney Johnson sharing 3 attempts for 2 kills each.
The Lady Bucs would like to thanks the Eielson Ravens for delaying their Saturday departure until Sunday morning so Senior night could be held after the conclusion of the wrestling tournament in the Lady Bucs own gym along with the wrestling team for prompt post-tournament clean-up as well—Thank You! Senior night is always filled with the emotions of the last game seniors get to compete on their home court in front of friends and family and for these five Lady Bucs: Kassi Howard, Kendal Wesenberg, Jade Watts, Carlee fleming, and Sydney Johnson—this night came way too quickly! This was their night to share with their family in center court as they were each called out in an outpouring of appreciation from teammates and friends while favorite times and future plans were announced for each senior. The Lady Bucs decided the night would not be complete without honoring their former coach, Ron Langseth, for his efforts throughout their high-school years, ultimately becoming State Champions. Lady Senior Bucs—we wish you all the best with your future endeavors.
After the Senior Night festivities worked their emotions up, Saturday night play began. The Valdez Lady Bucs, however, again took Eielson in three straight 25-11, 25-14, and 25-5. The Lady Bucs have their last conference game of the season next weekend with Monroe Catholic in Fairbanks followed by Regionals in Delta the following weekend. Congratulations Lady Bucs on your journey and enjoy the rest of the season honoring it with all of your best behavior, attitude, effort, tenacity, and volleyball court play! GO BUCS!

Eielson at Home
The Lady Bucs competed in their last home game this weekend against the Eielson Ravens. Both nights were a big success for our team, winning each game handily in three sets. In the first evening Reese King, Rylie King, and Bim Palomar were high servers against the Ravens. On Saturday Savannah Cockerham and Bekah Ambacher helped control the momentum of the game with their strong serving.
The Bucs were really working together covering each other’s passes, setting up attacks, prepared to help on the net. The final scores for Friday were 25-14, 25-20, 25-15, and for Saturday 25-17, 25-14, 25-17. Great work Lady Bucs!

On Friday night, both the boys Varsity and JV teams played Wasilla Middle. The Varsity boys won by a score of 44-30. Leading the way was Hunter Matthews and Anthony Kelly. The guys played really well, especially on the defensive end. The JV boys, although they played very hard, came up a little short to Wasilla’s JV team. Jacob Ambacher and Grayson Ade played well.
On Saturday, the Varsity boys suffered their first loss of the season to Teeland Middle. Although they held a lead going into the 4th quarter, playing on short rest caught up with them as Teeland pulled out the victory. The JV boys played really well and defeated Houston Middle’s Varsity team earlier in the day.
We are really proud of our guys for how we competed this weekend. The trip was a tough one for us logistically, as we had to play on short rest and did not have a deep bench. However, we competed and the guys represented the middle school and Valdez well.

Good competition awaited the Gilson Middle School basketball teams in the Valley. The Girls A team played a very aggressive Wasilla team that pressed the Huskies. “Our girls did not handle the pressure well initially”, said Coach Laurie Prax “but the last quarter of the game the girls played smart and held on for the win. Masen Holmes had 5 points and 7 rebounds, Chloe Auble had 9 points and 5 steals. Acacia Montgomery added 5 rebounds and Jasmine Bravo had 5 steals. On Saturday, the Huskies played Houston. The team had great teamwork and everyone contributed in the 48 to 12 win. Jasmine Bravo scored 12 points and had 5 steals in the game. Mya Christofferson had 7 steals, Carsyn Hinkle had 10 of the Huskies 20 points and picked up 6 steals. Masen Holmes had 8 rebound and Chloe Auble had 7 points.
The Valdez Girls B team had trouble gaining momentum against a scrappy Wasilla team on Friday. MoeMoe Togague scored 6 points and had 9 rebounds in their 11 to 33 loss. Sydney Burton and Justice Needles had 3 rebounds apiece. On Saturday the Huskies played a close game against Houston but too many turnovers plagued the girls and they lost 20 to 24. Ariel Voth and Angelina Grande scored 6 points apiece. Sydney Burton had 8 rebounds. Jasmine Hobson had 4 points and 4 rebounds and MoeMoe Togague had 2 pounts and 4 rebounds. The GMS teams will travel to Delta this weekend to play.

The team opened up the season on a strong note while the Varsity wrestled at Houston High School and JV & Varsity Girls at Wasilla High School. Overall it was a hard fought weekend all around. I am proud of our wrestlers and their composure when faced with great adversity. Win or lose they walked off the mat with their heads held high knowing that they gave it everything they had.
The Bucs are ready to get back in the room to make adjustments and prepare for Throw Down in Snow Town next weekend.

Kenny Lake Invite
The Lady Bucs JV Volleyball traveled to Kenny Lake to compete in the Kenny Lake Tournament against both Varsity and Junior Varsity teams. We were able to break our squad into two competitive teams which gave our athletes a lot of great playing time on the court.
The weekend started off with our Valdez JV team playing against Tai-Valley B. High servers for the match were Reese King and Hunter Hoppe.Savannah Cockerham led the team with attacks and kills at the net. We won the match in two sets with final scores of 25-22 and 25-17.
Next, our Valdez C team competed against Nenana. Both Ambrosia Woodgate led the team in serves for the game. Marianne Prax contributed to the teams with some excellent hustle plays and back-row attacks. We won the match in two sets with final scores of 25-18 and 25-23.
The Valdez JV team came back on the court to face Glennallen’s B team. Our team scored off of a lot of great set up and attacks against the Pawks. We narrowly lost the first set 22-25 but came back determined in the second set, winning 25-12 and finishing the match in a 15-11 victory. The team showed a lot of resilience and strength of character.
Valdez C came up against Glennallen A for our final competition of Friday evening. Even though we lost this match in two sets, the team had a great opportunity to defend against strong hitters. They scrambled after the ball and excellent saves while covering for each other. Marianne Prax stepped up to help cover a wide section of the court, scored some back row attacks, and also helped to maintain a positive attitude on the court. The two sets finished in 13-25 and 9-25.
On Saturday, Valdez C faced Tri-Valley A. Kyrcee Christensen and Marianne Prax had high serves for the match. The match was lost in two sets, 10-25 and 12-25.
Next, the Valdez JV faced Glennallen A in a grim defeat. Glennallen Pawks put up a strong attack, but our biggest opponent on the court was our own mental battle. We lacked the positive energy from Friday night and it affected our passing and coverage game. We lost the set in two games: 9-25 and 7-25.
The final match for Valdez JV (and for our team as a whole) was against Tri-Valley A. The mental battle continued with three giveaway points right from the start. This match was also a loss in two sets: 16-25 and 20-25.
Glennallen Pawks took the tournament championship followed by Tri-Valley A. Valdez JV took third place in the competition. Our team gained a lot of excellent experience playing against this diverse group of teams. We had a great weekend.
