Regionals 2018 Delta:  Valdez Lady Bucs—Undefeated!

The Lady Bucs held to their plan in Delta last weekend taking Delta 3-0, Hutchison 3-0, and Monroe 3-0 in straight wins moving on to State and remaining undefeated in both conference play 10-0-0 and regional play 3-0-0.

Leading serving against Delta in game one Kendall Wesenberg held true to form shoving over 9 for 7 with 3 aces followed by Jillian Fleming who was 7 for 5 with one ace.  Sydney Johnson led the kills off with 7 for 6 floored followed by Kassi Howard at 5 for 3 to finish 25-14.  Howard led serving in set 2 with 6 for 5 with one ace, Carlee Fleming was 5 for 4, Johnson 4 for 3 and Jade Watts 3 for 2 also contributing one ace.  Ally Sieber heated up game 2 with some kills going 8 for 6 followed by Johnson at 6 for 5, Howard tagging 3 for 2, and Macy Hansen 1 for 1.  Serving was spread around with Howard leading serving 6 for 5 with one ace, C. Fleming 5 for 4, Johnson 4 for 3, Wesenberg 4 for 2, Watts, 3 for 2, and J. Fleming 2 for 1 ending it 25-12.  Game 3 followed in similar fashion with J. Fleming serving 8 for 6 with 2 aces, C. Fleming 6 for 5, Johnson 5 for 4, and Wesenberg 4 for 3 to end the match 25-10 and get rid of some first game jitters!

Hutchison was up next as they beat Monroe and the Lady Bucs knew that winning this match placed them in the championship and automatically qualifies them for play at State so they got ready to earn every point as they know they have to do.  Game one, C. Fleming served it up going 8 for 6 with one ace, Johnson 6 for 4, and Watts not only throwing in 2 for 1 with an ace but leading the kills as well flooring 5 for 5, followed by Howard with 4 for 4, Sieber 2 for 2, Johnson 2 for 1, and Maison Anderson 1 for 1 ending game one 25-10.  Game 2 J. Fleming sent over an impressive 12 for 10 with 5 aces with Watts adding 5 for 4.  Howard and Johnson both had 4 kills, Sieber 3, Hansen 2, and Watts and C. Fleming 1 each, ending game 2 25-17.  The Lady Bucs knew Hutchison was going to give it their best in Game 3 and even though their play was not what they wanted it to be they kept pushing hard.  Johnson led a more aggressive serving game firing over 10 for 8 with 3 aces followed by C. Fleming with 8 for 6 with 2 aces.  Howard and Sieber both had 4 kills, while Johnson and Watts with 2 each, and Wesenberg adding 1 back-row kill to fend off Hutchison 25-22 placing them in the championship and earning another trip to State and shot at defending last years State Title.

It was a long wait for the Lady Bucs Saturday for the Championship at 2 pm with Monroe who bested Hutchison in the semi-finals just prior to playing the Lady Bucs.  It is always tough to come into a game with a team who has just played and is warmed up but the Lady Bucs, not really finding their rhythm, held on and surged ahead taking game one 25-20.  Johnson led serves 6 for 4  with one ace while Watts was 4 for 3 with 2 aces.  Howard went 3 for 3 kills with Johnson also adding 5 for 3 and Anderson 2 for 1.  Game 2 was another story.  The Lady Bucs struggled through game two serving 42% setting up a harder battle but they kept pushing and still searching for their rhythm.  Sieber led off the kills with 8 for 7 followed by Johnson at 7 for 5, Howard 2 for 2, Watts 4 for 2, and Hansen 2 for 1 to keep an advantage over the Rams and the Lady Bucs came out on top 28-26.  Game 3 serving proved a little more advantageous with both Watts and Howard leading off  6 for 5 with 2 aces while Johnson led kills at 5 for 5, Sieber 2 for 2, Howard 1 for 1, and Jackie Stewart 3 for 1.  The Lady Bucs took game 3  25 – 17 to win the Aurora Region Conference Championship  and remain undefeated in conference play going into the State competition next week.

The Awards and All-Tournament Team honored a few Lady Bucs as well!  Macy Hansen had to sit out last year with a shoulder injury but has returned this year  with an attitude every coach loves to have and added positivity, skill, and confidence not only to herself, but all others on the team which earned her Coach Sharrai’s choice for Good Sport—Keep up all the hard work and great effort Macy—great job!   Earning All-Tournament honors chosen by the opposing team coaches were Sydney Johnson, Jade Watts, and Kassi Howard with Carlee Fleming receiving MVP.   Great Job Lady Bucs!  Coach Sharrai was humbled in also receiving Coach of the Year.

I would like to thank the Lady Bucs for a great season filled with incredible play both in 3A and 4A, adventures to new places, and stories filled with laughter and smiles. Keep up your tenacious efforts, admirable team-work, kindness and support with one-another—it is what matters and that which you will remember!  This has been noticed by your competitions communities and parents as well. The genuine comments I have received throughout this season regarding your overall conduct and integrity couldn’t make me more proud and happy for you all.

Now,  go make some more, because you better remember it’s about the journey and you all have one week left to –as you say, “ Kick Booty!”   Great Job Lady Bucs and Go For It!

State Swimming, Submitted by Carl Young

We had a lot of fun over the weekend. Chase Randall & Jeffrey Prevost had the opportunity to take part in the State Swim Meet in Anchorage. They were able to watch and learn from some of the best high school swimmers in the state. Swimming is the only sport in Alaska that is divided up by 3A & 4A divisions. All schools in the state compete against one another at the State Championships no matter their size.

Chase Randall swam hard in his events & did the best he could. Overall Chase placed 15th in the 100 Backstroke & 16th in 200 Individual Medley in the entire State of Alaska. Chase had an excellent season and I look forward to his future seasons on the Buccaneer Swim Team.

The VHS Swim Team had on of the best seasons in the last 8 years and s our team continues to grow I look forward to the rising success of swimmers. A very good job to our Buccaneer Swim Team & I will see you all next season!

Alaska’s Minimum Wage Will Increase in January 2019

October 31, 2018 No. 18-41

JUNEAU, Alaska—The Alaska minimum wage will increase from $9.84 to $9.89 in 2019. Voters passed a ballot initiative in 2014 to raise the minimum wage by one dollar in both 2015 and 2016, and thereafter required the rate to be adjusted annually for inflation.

Alaska Statute 23.10.065(a) requires the Alaska minimum wage to be adjusted using the Consumer Price Index for urban consumers in the Anchorage metropolitan area (Anchorage CPI-U) for the preceding calendar year. The Anchorage CPI-U increased 0.5 percent in 2016, rising from 217.830 to 218.873. As a result, the minimum wage will rise from $9.84 to $9.89 effective January 1, 2019. By law, Alaska’s minimum wage must remain at least $1 per hour over the federal minimum wage.

The Alaska minimum wage applies to all hours worked in a pay period, regardless of how the employee is paid: whether by time, piece, commission, or otherwise. All actual hours worked in a pay period multiplied by the Alaska minimum wage is the very least an employee can be compensated by an employer.

Tips do not count toward the minimum wage. Under Alaska law, public school bus driver wages must be not less than twice minimum wage. Also, certain employees must be paid on a salary rate not less than twice minimum wage based on a 40-hour work week in order to maintain exempt status.

More information about Alaska’s wage laws can be found at: http://labor.alaska.gov/lss/whhome.htm.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Both the Varsity and JV boys won all of their games this weekend, going 5-0 between the two teams.  The Varsity defeated Delta twice, while the JV defeated Delta twice, and Kenny Lake once. All of our kids played extremely hard.  Our goal was to play to a standard focus on the small details.  As coaches, we feel like we did that and got better this weekend.

For the Varsity boys, Payton Gage, Bryce Tucker, and Owen Watson played really well.  As a team we played really well on the defensive end.  All of our guys were able to contribute and get valuable time on the floor. For the JV, Grayson Ade, Gavin Morris, and Jacob Ambacher led the way, both on the offensive and defensive end.  We are proud of these guys for continuing to play to a standard.

Valdez Varsity Volleyball – Coach Adam Sharrai

The Lady Bucs volleyball team headed north again to play Monroe Catholic Rams on their senior night in Fairbanks for the seasons last conference match-up.   The Lady Bucs would like to thank the Rams for acknowledging our five seniors as well.   After the senior night festivities and acknowledgements had taken place, the Lady Bucs started off slowly losing game one 18 -25 never really finding their rhythm.  However, after knocking off some “Bus Rust,” the Lady Bucs went to work!  They came into game two with a new found spirit and kept the ball rolling in their favor taking it 25-10 raising serving and kill ratios from a 40% range to 72% and 100% respectively.  Sydney Johnson had 6 kills, Kassi Howard added 3 while Ally Sieber put down 2, with Carlee Fleming and Macy Hansen each downing one.   Wesenberg served 9 for 7 with one ace, Jillian Fleming also had 7 for 5 with one ace, and Carlee Fleming added 4 for 3 points won.   A much needed change from game one was welcomed and the Lady Bucs continued on.  The Rams mounted an attack but it would not be enough as the Lady Bucs went on to take game three 25-18  with Ally Sieber leading kills with 7 attempts for 6 floored, Johnson at 5 for 4, Howard 2 for 2 along with Jade Watts, and Hansen adding one as well.  Game four remained a 100% for Johnson with 5 kills while Sieber added 2 more to take a 25-17 win and end Friday nights match.  Carlee Fleming ended the night with 44 assists while Jade Holmes also set very well, both with quality assists setting their teammates up very effectively.

Saturday began with a rarity–??–sleeping in!  The Rams, along with the Lady Bucs, had chosen to delay Saturdays start time due to ACT testing for seven team members from both teams who would be testing until 1 pm roughly.  The Lady Bucs made it back just in time for a few minutes of peppering and let the games begin!  Not properly warming up didn’t phase the Lady Bucs and they rallied right into game one taking the Rams 25-16 with Kendall Wesenberg  leading serving with 11 for 9 points won while Maison Anderson and Ally Sieber both went 4 for 3 kills each.  Game 2 followed suit with solid serving, passing, and hitting spread throughout the team winning 25-14.  Johnson floored 7 for 7 in game three with Sieber adding 3 more with aces coming from Fleming-2, Howard-2, Watts-1, Johnson-1, Wesenberg-1, and Jackie Stewart firing in 3 to end Saturdays play with the Rams in three straight at 25-15.  Fleming had 30 assist for the afternoon with Holmes adding to the teams success with 5 assists again both setting very comfortably and showing confidence in their setting placement and court movement.

The Lady Bucs have played well, worked hard, and have added to their abilities throughout the season not only in personal skill and court awareness, but in raising the support each of them share for one another and acknowledging the strength that, in itself, brings their team —Great Job Lady Bucs!

The effort produced by the Lady Bucs earned them an undefeated conference season, great play against many 4A teams in tournament play, and the number one seed going into Regional’s next week in Delta.  The Lady Bucs are anticipating fine-tuning their play and practicing very hard this week in final preparation for Regional play tenaciously striving for another conference championship and shot at a State Title.  The Lady Bucs know they can only play their best and are planning on earning every point with it!  Play well and be great competitors Lady Bucs—Great Job and keep it up!
