Childhood friends reunited more than 50 years after Good Friday Quake

Alaska Star – Friday’s earthquake may have been a boon for the producers of an upcoming PBS documentary featuring survivors of the 1964 Good Friday quake.

The documentary brings people together who haven’t seen each other in many years. In Dan Kendall of Eagle River was reunited with former Little League teammate and neighbor Rudolph “Bucky” Svein.

The episode dramatizes Kendall’s search, following him from Valdez — where he stands near the old waterfront and reminisces about the tsunami and earthquake that killed 32 people and destroyed most of the town — to a Seattle archive and eventually to Svein.

Real ID available in Alaska beginning January 2nd

Starting January 2nd, 2019, the Alaska Department of Motor Vehicles will start issuing Real ID compliant state IDs and driver’s licenses. Residents won’t be required to show them until October 2020 but are being encouraged to apply for a Real ID sooner than later.

The Real ID application requires more documentation than previous Alaska driver’s licenses. View the list HERE to see what you’ll need.

The cost is also higher: $40 for a driver’s license and $35 for a state ID. On the plus side, they will be valid for eight years and can be renewed online every other time, meaning you’ll only have to renew in person every 16 years.

Valdez judge selected for Juneau Superior Court

Juneau Empire – Daniel Schally’s first time in Alaska was as an intern for the City and Borough of Juneau’s Law Department. Now, he’s returning to Juneau, this time as a Superior Court judge.

Gov. Bill Walker named Schally as Juneau’s newest Superior Court judge. The position replaces a District Court judge position left by the retirement of Thomas Nave. The new Superior Court seat was created by the Alaska Legislature earlier this year in response to the rising number of felony cases in Juneau. A district court typically handles misdemeanors, while superior court typically handles felonies.

Four bitcoin for your data: how the City of Valdez retrieved their data after a cyber attack

KTUU – It was Friday, July 27 when City of Valdez employees first realized something was terribly wrong with the city’s computer network. 10 days before, Mat-Su Borough IT staff discovered activity from malicious code in its network.

“It didn’t take us but a moment to realize that there was a good chance we were being attacked with the same ransomware,” Valdez City Manager Elke Doom said. “…the first thing you typically do is you go ahead and do an update, you run your virus software, and…that’s when it will really infiltrate and seize your system.”

“We reached out to them (the third-party security company,) and through the dark web, anonymously, they reached out to the cyber attackers,” Doom said. “And they said ‘We understand you’ve seized my client’s system. What is it you’re looking for? And they (the attackers) came back with ‘Are you a hospital? Are you a bank? What are you?’ Trying to decide what they wanted to charge us for ransom.”

The attackers, assuming they had ransomwared a small company, decided on a relatively modest ransom of four bitcoin, around $26,000 at the time.

While Mat-Su Borough officials ultimately decided against paying the requested $400,000 ransom, the City of Valdez decided the need outweighed the cost and paid the requested ransom.
