Alaska suicide rate jumped 13% in five years.
A recently released state study shows the suicide rate in Alaska has jumped 13% in recent years. Suicide was the leading cause of death among Alaskans aged 10–64 years and is the sixth leading cause of death overall in Alaska.
During 2012–2017, Alaska’s suicide rate was either the first or second highest in the nation.
The most commonly documented incident characteristics included proven/suspected alcohol intoxication, current depressed mood, and intimate partner problems.

PFD Online Applications currently unavailable
Alaska residents had an unpleasant surprise when they discovered the PFD application website is undergoing unexpected maintenance due to a potential security breach. When the first users logged in January 1st, their forms auto-filled with other people’s information, complete with address, date of birth, and Social Security number.
The system was taken offline for repairs with no estimated timeline for going back online. The deadline to apply is March 31st.

Valdez Ice Climbing Festival
Valdez Adventure Alliance is pleased to announce the Valdez Ice Climbing Festival, sponsored in part through a grant from the City of Valdez, is coming Feb 15th-18th. The Festival features evening events at the Civic Center open to the public, including Mountainfilm on Friday, Tanana Rafters in concert Saturday, and the Ice Ball with speaker and dinner on Sunday.
Women’s Intro to Ice Climbing clinic, sponsored by The Fat Mermaid, is back this year. Marcus Garcia returns to teach the Youth Intro to Ice Climbing clinic and, new this year, a Youth Beginner clinic.
