Gilson Middle School Wrestling:

Coach Tyler Calvert-Thompson said, “I could not be more proud of this group of wrestlers. Each and every one of them went out and left everything out on the mat and that is all I could ever ask for. I was blown away by the intensity and fire they brought to each match.

With a few simple adjustments the entire team will be ready compete at the Delta Invitational next weekend. The future of Valdez wrestling looks very bright with this group coming up.”

Carlie V.: 1-2

Ryan G.: 1-1

Nick G.: 2-1

AJ T.: 0-3

Angelina G.: 0-2

Will C.: 1-2

Varsity on Saturday:

Gilson Middle School Volleyball

Thirty-seven girls traveled to Cordova for volleyball this weekend. A, B, and C teams dominated the Wolverines, with wins both days. Every girl got playing time, and coaches were pleased with the enthusiasm and teamwork.  Due to the extended stay, GMS Huskies remained positive, and spent Sunday resting. Each team had some court time to review skills. We will be playing inter squad games next weekend.

Gilson Middle School – Cross-Country Skiing

In their first year of Nordic skiing the Huskies had a successful season. On Saturday they finished their final time trials of the season in Valdez. Rafe C and Ruby B lead the skiers in 1st and 2nd respectively and Lily B was 1st for the MS girls. All of the skiers improved their skills and confidence throughout the season. A big thanks to first year coach Cole Beck in leading and growing our young skiers.

VHS Weekend Wrap-Up – January 28, 2019

Varsity Girls Basketball (Coach Joe Robison):

The Lady Buccaneer Basketball team competed in the Barrow Invitational this weekend, facing off against teams from Barrow, ACS, and Mt. Edgecumbe.

Thursday, January 24th:

The Bucs lost a close game to the home team Barrow Whalers on Thursday, 47 – 52.  After starting fast, the Lady Bucs fought to get back within just a couple points of the Whalers, but fell just short in the end.  The Buccaneers were led in scoring by Reese King with 17 points, while Ally Seiber and Jillian Fleming both added 11 points.

Friday, January 25th:

The Lady Bucs took on a very tough ACS team on Friday. resulting in a 29 – 76 loss.  After a slow start, the Bucs played much better over the final 3 quarters.  An important takeaway was the team continued to battle, despite the score.  Valdez was led in scoring by Reese King with 11 points .

Saturday, January 26th:

Valdez ended the weekend Saturday afternoon with a 60 – 59 victory over a very physical Mt. Edgecumbe team.  The Lady Bucs over came a 7 point halftime deficit and used a late score from Jade Watts to get the win.  Free throw shooting was the key to the game, as the Bucs were 9 for 13 in the fourth quarter.  Jade Watts led the way with 19 points, while Reese King chipped in 12 points and Ally Seiber added 11.

Reese King and Jade Watts were named to the All-Tournament team, while Jade Holmes was the tournament Free Throw contest for the girls division.

Coaches Comments:  “We played 3 physical game against really physical teams.  This was a trip that will serve us well as we head into conference play.  We also go quality minutes of the bench from Jade Holmes and Macy Hansen, which was critical for us all weekend.  The girls had a great trip and represented Valdez very well.”

Varsity Boys Basketball (Coach Bart Hinkle):

VHS Varsity Boys Basketball Wrap-Up [Barrow Invitational Tournament, Jan. 24th-26th]

Thursday, January 24th:    Valdez 42, ACS 59

The Buccaneers traveled north to Utqiagvik to participate in the Barrow Invitational Tournament – a 4 team round robin style tournament which boasted a field of Mt. Edgecumbe, ACS, Valdez, and the host Barrow Whalers.

Valdez drew ACS in the opening round – a rematch of the Jan. 5th championship game at the ACS Tournament.  Similar to that game, Valdez was within a handful of points at halftime but ACS was able to pull away in the second half – resulting in a 59-42 ACS victory.

Bennett Hinkle scored 13 points with 5 steals, Logan Heckathorn scored 12 points with 7 rebounds, and Jalen Freeman scored 11 points while shooting 7-of-8 from the free throw line.  Bennett Hinkle successfully drew an offensive foul.

Friday, January 15th:  Valdez 44, Barrow 40

The second night of the tournament saw the Bucs pitted against the hometown Whalers – for the 3rd time thus far this season.  The Bucs have emerged victorious in the previous two outings, but playing Barrow in Barrow is an experience unlike any other in high school basketball.  The crowd is typically at maximum capacity and consists of everyone from toddlers to elders, and all of them are well-versed in the organized cheers (or jeers).  The 6 pm time-frame was a marquee matchup, and neither the game or the crowd disappointed.

From the onset the crowd was raucous and involved in the game, spurring Barrow out to an early 12-6 first quarter lead, and an eventual 25-17 halftime advantage.  As is customary for teams that have played each other so recently, the scoring was hard to come by for both sides. This was exacerbated by the Bucs shooting 1-10 from the 3-pt line in the first half.

The second half continued along the same vein, with Valdez slightly edging Barrow in the 3rd quarter scoring at 13-10.  The Bucs entered the final stanza behind by a count of 35-30. The game remained in Barrow’s favor until Valdez was able to edge ahead with about 2:00 remaining in the game.  From there they never relinquished the lead – sealing a 44-40 Buccaneer win when Logan Heckathorn made 2 free throws with 2.2 seconds left on the clock.

Despite the low score, the game was exceptionally well-played.  There were a total of 7 free throws shot the entire game [Valdez was 3-for-6, Barrow 0-for-1].  The two teams combined for only 16 fouls and 23 turnovers.

The Bucs featured a balanced scoring attack:  Kyler LaBonte led with 10 points and 6 rebounds; Logan Heckathorn chipped in 9 points and made all 3 Valdez free throws; Jalen Freeman also scored 9 points while grabbing 5 rebounds; Ike Watson continued his effective interior play against Barrow as he chipped in 8 points and grabbed 14 rebounds; Bennett Hinkle contributed 8 points and registered 6 assists.  Kyler LaBonte successfully drew a critical offensive foul during Barrow’s final half-court possession, with Valdez leading 42-40.

Saturday, January 26th:  Valdez 79, Mt. Edgecumbe 40

Saturday’s afternoon game featured Valdez vs. Mt. Edgecumbe – a rematch from the final game for each team at last year’s State Championship tournament.  It also featured one of the few times this year that the Bucs have played against a zone defense. Perhaps it was a different look, or a confidence-inspiring win from the night before, but the Bucs offense started – and ended- the game firing on all cylinders.

The Bucs jumped out to an early 13-0 lead and ended the first quarter leading by a score of 19-12.  They extended that lead and entered halftime with a 35-25 advantage. After intermission, the Bucs exerted their will on Mt. Edgecumbe – dominating in their ¾ court trapping press and effectively running their zone offense.  The Bucs outscored Mt. Edgecumbe 44-15 in the second half en route to a convincing 79-40 win.

Valdez shot 58% [32-for-55] from the field, including 8-for-16 from the 3-point line.  The long-range efficiency was led by Kyler LaBonte (3 for 4) and Jimmy Chavez (3 for 5).  Kyler LaBonte led all scorers with 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting. Bennett Hinkle scored 17 points while going 7-7 from the field, and Logan Heckathorn poured in 15 points and 5 rebounds.  In addition to his 9 points, Jimmy Chavez also grabbed 5 rebounds.

In a true team effort, all Bucs registered playing time and the 32 converted field goals in the game were a result of 23 assists [Bennett Hinkle had 7, Logan Heckathorn 6, and Jalen Freeman 5].  Ike Watson successfully drew an offensive foul and Julius Bauss capped his VHS career with 2 points, sinking both of his free throw attempts.

Notes:

Bennett Hinkle was named to the All-Tournament Team for the Barrow Invitational Tournament, and Julius Bauss won the free-throw shooting contest.

The Buccaneers next face Aurora Conference rivals Monroe Catholic on Friday and Saturday in their last regular season home games of the year (excluding the Elk’s Tournament).

Friday, February 1st is slated to be Black Out day.  All VHS fans are encouraged to attend in black attire.

Saturday, February 2nd is Senior Night.  The boys basketball program will be recognizing the following Seniors:  Ike Watson, Logan Heckathorn, Kyler LaBonte, Bennett Hinkle, and Justin Prax.

Ptarmigan Hunting Seasons Set to Change in Units 13B and 13E

January 25, 2019 (Palmer) – Under new regulations in effect this year, ptarmigan hunting

seasons in Game Management Units 13B and 13E will close on February 15. The new rules,

adopted by the Alaska Board of Game last February, align the seasons in Units 13B and 13E by

shortening the Unit 13E ptarmigan season by six weeks while adding 10 weeks of hunting in

Unit 13B.

The board adopted the new seasons to address concerns that late-winter hunting (mid-February

through March) in 13E, particularly within 2-3 miles of the Denali Highway which transects Units

13E and 13B, was negatively impacting ptarmigan numbers. Meanwhile, additional late-winter

harvest opportunity was found to be warranted for Unit 13B, where ptarmigan have increased

under hunting seasons that previously closed on November 30.

“Ptarmigan harvests are normally low between late-November and mid-February,” said state

Small Game Biologist Rick Merizon. “Days are short and cold that time of year, and snow

conditions typically don’t afford good access.”

When snow conditions and access improve with the longer, warmer days typical of mid-

February and late-March, hunter effort and harvest increase, Merizon said. High harvest rates

during this time of year can have a direct impact on spring breeding populations.

The new hunting season dates include all three ptarmigan species – willow, rock, and whitetail.

Ptarmigan hunting seasons in both units will continue to start on August 10, and bag limits

remain 10 birds per day, 20 in possession.

VHS Weekend Wrap-Up – Jan 21, 2019

Girls JV Basketball (Coach Jodi Arnold):

Friday, January 18th:   Valdez  31,  Eielson 5

Saturday, January 19th:  Valdez  36,  Eielson 32

Coaches’ Comments:

This weekend we played our first JV home games of the season. Throughout both games our girls played great defense and moved the ball well on offense. Saturday was a different game with Eielson adding a player that did not play Friday. I was very proud of how our team handled the additional pressure they put on us.

High scorers for Friday were Ambrosia Woodgate with 11, Lilly Alfaro with 10, and Marianne Prax with 8.

High scorer for Saturday was Rylie King with 11. The rest of our points were fairly evenly distributed throughout the rest of the team with all players scoring.

Girls Varsity Basketball (Coach Joe Robison):

Friday:   Lady Bucs  53,  Eielson  17

The Lady Bucs pulled away from Eielson early using their pressure to build a 25 – 1 first quarter lead.  The Bucs were led by Jade Watts with 15 points an Ally Seiber with 13.  Everyone was able to get valuable playing time.

Saturday:    Lady Bucs  55,  Eielson  10

Once again, the Lady Bucs pulled away early and built a significant lead.  The Bucs were led by Ally Seiber’s 17 points.  Jillian Fleming added 11 points and Jade Holmes chipped in 10 points.

Coach’s Comments:

“I was very proud of our girls for starting fast and working on the things that we wanted to.  Eielson is down this year, but they are doing things the right way and working to get better.  This was an opportunity for us to work on some details that we need to clean up, and get everyone valuable minutes as we get into the meat of our season.”

Boys JV Basketball (Coach Lee Chadwick):

This past weekend the JV boys played the Eielson Ravens at home. It was good to be back in front of the home crowd, and fun to see it well attended.

On the first night, the boys fell quickly behind to the Ravens ending the first quarter down 7-20.  However, with a renewed energy and focus on defense, we narrowed deficit to 2 by halftime. We won the third quarter 14-5, but then allowed a finishing run by the Ravens to bring the game to a tense end. Ultimately, our defense held off the final attempts to send the game to overtime, and we won by a score of 50-47. Storm Rohrer led the scoring with 10, while Moe Morgan contributed 7 rebounds.

Saturday, we met the Raven’s intensity from the beginning, successfully adjusting to their full court press and changing defenses. In the second period we began to pull away and never looked back. The final score was 68-43.  Austin Crawford lead all scorers with 18, while Dennis Mott had 8 rebounds.

Boys Varsity Basketball (Coach Bart Hinkle):

Friday, January 18th:    Valdez 56, Eielson 40

The Bucs took the home court for the first time in 2019 and faced off against Aurora Conference rival Eielson Ravens.  In what can only be described as an abysmal start to the game, the Bucs dug themselves an early hole by committing unforced turnovers, excessive fouls, and sporting an anemic offense (resulting in an early 12-2 Eielson lead).  Fortunately, upper-class maturity helped to right the ship and the boys took a 19-17 halftime lead into the locker room – thanks to a renewed interest in intense man-to-man defense and a ¾ court trapping press. That trend continued throughout the third quarter, as the Bucs took control of the game by dominating that stanza 21-8 enroute to a 56-40 win.

The Bucs defense forced the Ravens into 27 turnovers, but also committed 20 of their own.  However, the Bucs were able to turn those turnovers into 28 points, while Eielson only recorded 16 points off of turnovers.  The Bucs also outscored the Ravens 24-18 in the paint.

Ike Watson recorded a double-double as he poured in 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.  Bennett Hinkle also scored 16, while snatching 7 steals. Kyler LaBonte contributed 14 points and 5 steals.  Owen Chadwick chipped in 6 points, and 5 rebounds, with zero turnovers while harassing the Eielson ballhanders on the defensive end.  All ten Bucs that were suited up for the game registered playing time.

Saturday, January 19th:  Valdez 61, Eielson 51

As is typical for tough Aurora Conference weekends, the second consecutive night of games saw the road team come out more refreshed and sharper in their execution than the prior night.  The contest remained close in the first half, with neither team able to build a lead larger than 4 points. The Bucs entered intermission with a 30-29 lead, as Logan Heckathorn led the way with 14 first half points.

As was the case Friday, the Bucs used the 3rd quarter to establish (and build upon) a lead, outscoring the Ravens 21-13.  The pace slowed in the 4th, as the Bucs wound the clock down and forced the Ravens to foul – leading to 11 FT attempts for the Bucs in the 4th.  Only 6 of those attempts were converted, but was enough to secure a 61-51 Buccaneer victory.

Logan Heckathorn led the Bucs in scoring with 23 points, while also dishing out 3 assists.  Bennett Hinkle scored 13 and led the Bucs with 8 rebounds. Owen Chadwick chipped in 11 and snagged 3 rebounds.  Ike Watson had 9 points, 7 rebounds and Kyler LaBonte scored 5 points while grabbing 6 rebounds.

Notes:

On Wednesday (Jan. 22nd), the Bucs travel to Utqiagvik [formerly known as Barrow] for the Barrow Invitational Tournament.  The format is a 4-team round robin; the Bucs will be playing three strong 3A programs in Mt. Edgecumbe, Anchorage Christian School, and Barrow.  In addition to the on-court action, the Buccaneers will also be present to witness the first sunrise (at 1:04 pm on January 24th) that Utqiagvik has seen since November 18, 2018.

This Week in Sports:

Basketball:   Varsity Boys and Girls Basketball will travel to Barrow for a 4 Team Round Robin Tournament.  (Streaming does not sound like it will be available.)

Nordic Ski:  Traveling to Fairbanks for Ski Meet at Birch Hill on Saturday 11:00 am.
