VHS Weekend Wrap-Up – May 20, 2019

4X800 Boys

Courtesy of VHS Coaches – The Bucs took advantage of some unseasonably warm and sunny weather and had a fantastic performance this weekend at Regions. Highlights include even more new school records set by this incredible 2019 team! Jeffery Prevost set a new school record in the 110m Hurdles with a time of 18.70 and with a time of 18.45, Kassi Howard set a new VHS record in the 100m Hurdles. Hunter Hoppe broke her own school record of 28 feet with a Shot Put throw of 29’2.5” and the boy’s 4X100 relay team knocked even more time off their school record they set last week with a finish time of 45.52.

  • Owen Chadwick with 1st place finishes in the 100m, 200m, and 300m Hurdles.
  • Kyler LaBonte with a 1st place finish in the High Jump.
  • 1st place finish for the 4X100 relay team of Hayden Howard, Kyler LaBonte, Jalen Freeman, and Owen Chadwick.
  • Josh Baczuk with a 2nd place finish in the Long Jump with a distance of 17’ 5.25”.
  • Jalen Freeman with a 3rd place finish in the Triple Jump and 5 th place in High Jump.
  • Hayden Howard with a 4th place finish in the 200m.
  • Jeffrrey Prevost finished 3rd in 110 Hurdles, and 5th place in the 300m Hurdles.
  • Gaspar DeLeon placed 5th in Discus and 6th place in Shot Put.
  • Luke Baczuk placed 6th in Discus and 5th place in the 800m.
  • Blake Morrison finished 8th in the 1600m and 8th in the 800m.
  • 3rd place finish by the 4X400 relay team of Josh Baczuk, Logan Anderson, Jeffrey Prevost, and Hayden Howard.
  • 3rd place finish by the 4X800 relay team of Josh Baczuk, Tate Chadwick, Logan Anderson, and Luke Baczuk.

  • Kassi Howard with a 1st place finish in the High Jump, 3rd place in the 100m Hurdles, and 3rd place in the 800m.
  • Hunter Hoppe with a 1st place finish in Shot Put and 3rd place in Discus with a 77’.7 “throw.
  • 2nd place finish by the 4X100 relay team of Sophia Palomar, Cherubinm Palomar, Kylie Fletcher-Gilbert, and Kassi Howard.
  • Kylie Fletcher-Gilbert finished 3rd in Long Jump, 3rd in the 100m, and 3rd in the 200m.
  • Marianne Prax finished 3rd in the 300m Hurdles and 5th in the 100m Hurdles.
  • Kat Taylor finished 5th in Discus with a 70’8” throw and 4th in Shot Put with 23’4.5”.
  • Ambrosia Woodgate finished 4th place in the Triple Jump, and 6th in the 800m, and 7th in the 400m.
  • Sophia Palomar had a 6th Place finish in the 100m, and 6th place in the 200m.
  • Cherubim Palomar finished 8th in the Long Jump, and 9th in the Discus.

Jeremiah and Jessica McMillen welcomed Charles Lee McMillen to the world on May 14th, 2019 at 3:36am.

He weighed 16 lbs. 7.1 oz. and was 19” long.

Valdez Comprehensive Waterfront Master Plan Public Meetings

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

For Immediate Release

May 9, 2019

Don’t miss the next round of public meetings for the Valdez Comprehensive Waterfront Master Plan that

begins the week of May 20. During that week there will be a series of public workshops and open sessions

will allow the public to provide input and help craft the preferred master plans.

Monday, May 20 from 7:00 – 9:00 PM

Public Workshop #4

Review the alternative master plans and cost estimates that have been developed for the five sites.

Provide input on desired programming and facilities for each.

Tuesday, May 21 and Wednesday, May 22 from 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Public Open Studio Session

Drop-in session to talk with the planning team and provide additional input

Wednesday, May 22 from 7:00 – 9:00 PM

Public Workshop #5

Review the draft preferred master plans based on input from meeting #1 and provide input.

All meetings to be held in the Whitney Room at the Airport.

The City of Valdez is developing a Comprehensive Waterfront Master Plan to examine what types of new

development might occur in the future in keeping with the community character, providing the needed

services and facilities, and promoting economic opportunities. Through the planning effort, the project will

ensure the long-term viability of commercial fishing enterprise, commercial business, parking, infrastructure

of the working waterfront, while increasing visitor traffic to the waterfront. Preserving public access to the

waterfront and improving aesthetics are also components to the planning effort. Primary areas of the master

planning include:

• The existing Small Boat Harbor uplands;

• New Commercial Boat Harbor Uplands;

• Sea Otter Property at the end of South Harbor Drive;

• The Valdez Container Terminal; and

• The Old Valdez Town Site.

VHS Weekend Wrap-Up – May 13, 2019

ASAA State Solo and Ensemble Festival

Fourteen VHS students qualified for performance and adjudication at the ASAA State Solo and Ensemble Festival this past weekend at UAA.  All students performed well in the twelve events that Valdez entered.  Judges gave the following performances a Superior rating–indicating outstanding performance in all aspects:

Lexie Henderson:  Jazz Solo, “La Vie En Rose,” accompanied by members of Jazz Band

Chloe Miller:  Jazz Solo, “Summertime,” accompanied by members of Jazz Band

Isaiah Silveira:  Jazz Solo, “Foggy Day,” accompanied by members of Jazz Band

Isaiah Silveira, Sam Norris, Sara Bauman, and Alex Britton:  “Hello, Mary Lou” Barbershop Quartet

Rowan Miller, Sara Bauman, Caitlin Mond, and Lexie Henderson:  “Autumn”, Vocal classical quartet

Rowan Miller, Sara Bauman, Caitlin Mond, and Lexie Henderson, Isaiah Silveira, Sam Norris, Allie Millican, and Alex Britton:  “Emerald Stream”, Classical mixed ensemble

In addition, the following students participated:  Grace Keller, Cameron Bowden,  Kristian Balowski, and Lydia Merioles.

Coaches note:  I am so proud of how our students represented our school, overcame obstacles to success, and worked to have “peak” performances prepared for State competition.– Ann Norris

Throwers relay

Courtesy of Coach Walker – Despite cold and windy weather, the VHS Track and Field team continued their record-breaking streak this past weekend at the Palmer Invite. Owen Chadwick broke the VHS record in the 200m last set in 2004 with a time of 23.02. Kassi Howard set a new VHS record in the 100m Hurdles with a finish time of 18.58 seconds, and the Boy’s 4X100 relay team of Hayden Howard, Kyler LaBonte, Jalen Freeman, and Owen Chadwick broke the previous record with a time of 46.05 seconds.

Other highlights of the weekend were a 1st place finish in High Jump for Kassi Howard with a with a 5 foot jump and a 3rd place High Jump finish for Kyler LaBonte with a jump of 5’8”. Owen Chadwick had a 4th place overall finish in the 100m with a time of 11.73, and in the 200m with a 23.02. Jeffrey Prevost had a new personal record in the 110m Hurdles with an 18.99

second run and the boy’s 4X200 relay team of Hayden Howard, Kyler LaBonte, Jalen Freeman, and Logan Anderson finished 5th overall with a tie of 1:38.42. Gaspar DeLeon had a new personal record Discus throw of 100’4”. Kylie Fletcher-Gilbert finished 5th overall in Long Jump with a 14’1” jump and Ambrosia Woodgate set a new personal record in Triple Jump with a

27’9.5” jump. Hunter Hoppe threw a new personal record in Discus with a 78’6” throw.

Logan 300m Hurdles

The 4X100 Thrower’s Relay (participants must have competed in Shot Put or Discus earlier in the season) of Brandon Nguyen, Wyatt Mehlberg, Gaspar DeLeon, and Luke Baczuk, established a new VHS record and had a 4th place overall finish.
