Competition for weekly prizes is close in Halibut Derby

Weekly Winner: Roger Hage – 128.6 – Tucson, AZ – 6-18 – Orion

VALDEZ, Alaska – “It feels incredible! It doesn’t even feel real right now”, said Christina Ives a couple days after reeling in a 285.6 pound halibut. Ives won the 1st place weekly prize and is currently in 1st place overall in the derby. If her fish hangs on as the largest through the end of the Valdez Halibut Derby September 1st, she could win $10,000 cash. Ives moved from Wisconsin to Alaska four years ago as a student and is currently working as a Corrections Officer in Fairbanks. “I’m just trying to live the Alaska Dream, I guess”, said Ives.

The competition is heating up for weekly prizes and 1st and 2nd place in the Valdez Halibut Derby. On Monday night last week, Edward Wahmann was in 3rd place overall with a 126.2 pound halibut. After Tuesday night’s weigh-in, Wahmann was off the board as two big fish were brought in Tuesday night. Mike Stitzel of Anchorage, Alaska reeled in a 126.8 pound halibut and Roger Hage of Tucson, Arizona brought in a 128.6 pound halibut. Hage took over the 3rd place overall spot.

Pink Salmon are expected to be available by the 4th of July weekend and should be in the Port of Valdez for the Annual Kids Pink Salmon Derby. While pinks can likely be caught July 4th weekend, there’s a Kids Pink Salmon Derby in Valdez Saturday, July 20th when the fish are thick in the Port. The Kids Pink Salmon Derby is free and the first 300 kids to weigh in a fish get a free t-shirt. The top three fish in four different age divisions will win a prize. There’s a free family BBQ at the end of the Derby. For more information about the Kids Pink Salmon Derby and other Valdez fishing events, visit www.valdezfishderbies.com. The biggest pink salmon caught in the 2018 Valdez Kids Derby was a 7.80 pounder caught by Liliana Garcia of Fairbanks. The largest fish ever caught in the Kids Derby is a 10.12 pound pink caught by Alex Plowman of Fairbanks.

The silver salmon will be right on their tails, arriving in mid to late July. The Valdez Silver Salmon Derby starts July 20th, the same day as the Kids Derby, so anglers wanting a great family trip can fish for both pinks and silvers in the same weekend.

The Women’s Silver Salmon Derby is slated for August 10th with an opening ceremony Friday night August 9th.  The theme of this year’s Women’s Derby is “Pajama Party” and there will be a group costume contest Friday night as well as live music by singer songwriter Michelle McAfee who lives in Portland most of the year and spends summers in McCarthy, Alaska. The Women’s Silver Salmon Derby will crown the 1st place winner and name them “Queen of the Silver Salmon Sisterhood.” Valdez Fish Derbies also awards prizes for the top 50 on Saturday night. CLICK HEREfor details on the Women’s Derby. Chances of knocking off the leaders in the Valdez Halibut Derby

VALDEZ, Alaska – Christine Ives of Fairbanks is still in the lead in the Valdez Halibut Derby with the 285.6 pound halibut she caught June 6th aboard the Nunatak. David Stack of Tyler, Texas is still in 2nd place overall with the 158. 2 pound halibut he caught on June 6th. Stack caught his 158.2 pound halibut aboard the Sea Walker. Edward Wahmann of Tok, Alaska is currently in 3rd place overall with a 126.2 pound halibut caught June 8th aboard the Nunatak. There’s a good chance, anglers will topple the leaders in 2nd and 3rd place but it is debatable whether anyone will be able to catch a fish larger than Ive’s 285.6 pounder.

Here’s a look at the weight of the winning fish in the Valdez Halibut Derby the last few years. In 2018, Patricia Johnson of Clovis, California won with a 285.8 pound halibut. In 2017, a 374.0 pound halibut caught by Frieda Wiley was the winner. A 374 pound halibut is much larger than Ives 285.6 pound halibut, but when gauging one’s chances it’s good to consider that Wiley’s catch was the largest fish caught on record in the Valdez Halibut Derby. In 2016 it was David Jamison of Fairbanks taking home the cash prize with a 253.0 pound halibut. In 2015 the grand prizewinner was a 196.2 pound halibut caught by Brad Burch of Clackamus, Oregon. In 2014, Scott Hebig of Wasilla, Alaska won the big money with a 203.6 pound halibut and in 2013 James Culley took home the big prize with a 325 pound halibut.

When figuring odds, one could also look at when the winning fish have been caught. In 2018, the winning halibut was caught June 26th. In 2017, Wiley’s record-breaking fish was caught August 6th. In 2016 Jamison’s 253 pound halibut was caught May 29th and held on to win at the end of the derby. Although small, the winning fish in 2015 was caught August 26th. One never knows when the big fish will strike. The two things for certain are it could happen at any time and you must have a derby ticket when it does.

The weekly winners in the Valdez Halibut Derby were Heather Ropelato of Boise, Idaho. She reeled in a 109.8 pound halibut June 14th aboard the Red Head. Tallon Littlewood of Wasilla, Alaska won the 2nd place weekly prize with a 104.4 pound halibut he caught aboard the Reflection on June 10th. The winner of the Halibut Hullabaloo tournament and an extra $1,000 cash is Edward Wahmann of Tok, AK with a 126.2 pound halibut caught aboard the Nunatak.

The Valdez Fish Derbies will be hosting the Kids Pink Salmon Derby Saturday, July 20th and the Women’s Silver Salmon Derby is slated for August 10th with an opening event Friday, August 9th. For more information on the Valdez Derbies, visit: www.valdezfishderbies.com

Coast Guard saves six people, tows disabled vessel in Port Etches

KODIAK, Alaska – A Coast Guard Station Valdez 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boat crew rescued six people and towed their disabled and adrift 22-foot vessel Freebird in Hinchinbrook Entrance near Port Etches, Prince William Sound, Alaska, Saturday.

The Station Valdez boat crew transported all six people with their disabled vessel in tow to safe harbor in Valdez.

Sector Anchorage command center watchstanders received notification from the vessel Freebird reporting that six people were in distress aboard their disabled and adrift boat in the Hinchinbrook Entrance with no ability to anchor. Sector Anchorage launched a Station Valdez boat crew to assist with the rescue and vessel tow.

The good Samaritan vessel Tug Challenger arrived on scene to help until Coast Guard crews were able to assist.

“We are grateful for any good Samaritan assistance throughout Alaska, and for the quick notification from the Freebird crew,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Jason Roe, a Sector Anchorage operations unit watchstander  “It is the combination of the two that allowed us to be on scene and provide assistance that lead to such a positive outcome for these people.”

Weather on scene was 17 mph winds, 3-foot seas and rainy.

A press release from the Coast Guard describes rescuing six people aboard a disabled vessel on Sunday but didn’t mention a local Valdez man who initially towed the boat two hours in rough waters from Hinchinbrook Entrance to Port Etches. Josh Miller was on an overnight fishing trip and responded to a distress call with his boat the Kai Moana.
