Goat Hunt RG249 Closes North of Valdez Arm

(Cordova) – Registration permit hunt RG249 for mountain goats in Game Management Unit 6D will close by emergency order at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, October 6. The hunt includes areas east of Columbia Glacier, north of Valdez Arm and west of Port Valdez, Shoup Bay and Shoup Glacier.

The most recent aerial survey found a minimum count of 235 goats in registration permit area RG249. The maximum allowable harvest is 12 goat points. The current reported harvest is nine billies, each counting as one goat point. Hunters remain in the field and it’s likely that additional goats have been taken and not yet reported. This closure is necessary to prevent unsustainable harvest.

This closure affects only registration permit hunt RG249 in Unit 6D. All other mountain goat hunting regulations in the remainder of Unit 6 are not affected by this emergency order.

Cross Country

State Championships, Bartlett 2019

After an amazing send off by staff and students, the Cross-Country Team headed to Anchorage for the State Championships.  The whole team had the honor of racing this year after the boy’s team took 1st place at Regionals.

The forecast was not looking too favorably for the runners.  There was rain and possible snow predicted for Anchorage.  The team was hoping that the wind would at least subside.  The wind did die down and the heavy rains came in the night.  The trail was a bit sloppy in places, but we were prepared with ¼” spikes to attack the mud.  The course consists of one short loop and then a second longer loop.  The course is a consistent rollercoaster of ups and downs with few flat areas.

At noon, the Division II boys lined up at the starting line.  The sun finally came out to greet the runners.  The start gun fired and K. Woods and J. Shiozaki took off towards the front of the pack.  After the first hill, they begin to lose steam.  Shiozaki, Woods, Alfaro and Benes remained with seconds of each other for most of the race.  Smilie and C. Wadsworth remained close during the first lap and then Smilie began to pull ahead and closed the gap between himself and Alfaro.  C. Wadsworth slipped and had hit his ankle, slowing his pace slightly.  W. Mehlberg remained steady throughout the race.

The finish was full of surprises for the boys.  Sophomore Jin Shiozaki pulled ahead of Senior Kalin Woods to finish 31st out of 72 runners at 18:40, over a minute faster than his time at the beginning of the season.  K. Woods finished 34th at 18:50 with a time one minute faster than his state preview time.  The biggest upset was seeing Sophomore William Benes coming down the finish in 48th place with a time of 19:37, ahead of Senior Rafael Alfaro who finished 60th at 20:09.  Freshman Jason Smilie made some impressive gains this season and finished 65th at 20:50, which is over two minutes faster than his state preview time at the beginning of the season.  Freshman Cole Wadsworth finished strong at 22:15.  Junior Wyatt Mehlberg remained steady and finished really strong at 26:57.

Overall, the boys placed 7th for Division II.

At 1:30 sixty-seven Division II girls lined at the start.  S. Palomar and C. Miller started off strong with Palomar taking the lead for Valdez for the first lap.  K. Wadsworth and M. Ishikawa weren’t far behind their teammates.  Senior Chloe Miller quickened her pace during the second lap and finished with a girl from Delta in 37th place at 23:30, over three minutes faster than the beginning of the season.  Senior Sophia Palomar turned on the sprint for a 42nd place  finish for a time of 24:11, which is forty-eight seconds faster than in August.  Senior Katelyn Wadsworth wasn’t far behind in 48th place at 24:40, over a minute faster than the state preview.  Sophomore Momoka Ishikawa almost beat her personal record from regionals with a time of 25:47.

During our fast and furious season, these athletes have demonstrated dedication, determination and a whole lot of grit.  Two members of our team were awarded Good Sportsmanship awards.  Senior Rafael Alfaro received the Good Sportsmanship award for encouraging his teammates to continue doing their best, even when he was injured and unable to practice.  Senior Sophia Palomar also received the Good Sportsmanship award for her team spirit and positive attitude throughout the season.

Everybody on this incredible team grew as an athlete and as a runner during the 2019 season!

Go Bucks!

BOYS A TEAM WINS DELTA TOURNAMENT

Boys A Team Won the Delta Tournament

Courtesy of David Cronk – This past weekend the Huskys traveled up to Delta for their Season Opener Tournament.  Valdez sent approximately 60 athletes to Delta for the event.

Boys A-Team

The Boys A-Team had a great showing at the Delta Tournament.  We opened with a win over Tok.  The Huskys played great defense which was a common theme throughout the weekend.  Scoring was very balanced lead by Jarrett Gage, Owen Watson, and Tino Tucker who were all in double figures.  Following them were Nick Alfaro, Grayson Ade, Gavin Morris, and Corey Petersen.

In game 2, the Huskys defeated Glennallen. Again, the Huskys played great defense, and down the stretch our defense wore them down.  The forth quarter was owned by Valdez, outscoring Glennallen 15-2.   Leading the scoring was Nick Alfaro with 12, and Jarrett Gage with 10.

Game 3, the championship was a rematch with Glennallen.  In their best showing of the weekend the Huskys defeated Glennallen 53-18.  The game started close with a first quarter score of 11-9, Valdez holding a 2 point lead.  After that it was all Valdez.  The Husky’s defense held the Panthers scoreless in the second quarter and kept it rolling from there.  Leading the Huskys in the championship game was Jarrett Gage with 19 points.  Following were Corey Petersen, Grayson Ade, Tino Tucker, Owen Watson, Gavin Morris, and Nick Alfaro .

Owen Watson and Nick Alfaro were named to the All-Tourmanent Team, with Nick Alfaro being named the Tournament MVP.

BOYS B TEAM

The crowd cheers on the Boys B Team at the Delta Tournament. The boys B team took 2nd place in the tournament.

Courtesy of Coach Auble – This weekend’s trip to Delta for basketball was great. The boys B team had successful games against Delta, Tri-Valley, and Glennallen. Our first game against on Friday we played Glennallen and held a strong lead thanks to fast break layups by many of our players as well as slowing down the ball to set up into our offense. Our on-ball defense was great as we held Glennallen down to single digits in the first half thanks to teamwork with packline defense to trap any drives.

Our second game against the Tri-Valley Warriors was tough but we managed to secure a win again thanks to our tenacious on-ball defense by our players. Andrew Baczuk and Rylen case managed to hold their top scorer down with high-pressure defense while Romen Webber and Case were able to score plenty of fast break layups. Case was our top scorer with 20 points, and Webber at 10. We also managed to get playing time for our two sixth grade swingers.

Our third game against the home team Delta Grizzlies was successful with keeping them under 20 points to our 45. Rylen Case contributed 14 points, with Romen Webber being our next top scorer with 12. We made the majority of our points off of fast break layups again with the occasional pass and cut to a layup. Our last game in the Championship was again against Delta but we couldn’t pull this one off due to Delta’s changing defense and lack of made layups. We look forward to the next four days of practice and seeing them again on our home court this weekend.

BOYS C TEAM

Courtesy of Coach Jim Doering – The C-Team, comprised of 14 6th graders new to organized basketball came out of the gates enthusiastic and scrappy in all three games this past weekend up in Delta.

Game 1 saw the boys falling the the eventual champs, Delta B, 24-36.  After a first round loss the boys had a 7am game on Saturday morning.  They were up for the task and comfortably defeated Glennallen by over 20 points.  Game three proved to be a shooting struggle for the Huskys.  They fell to Warriors of Tri-Valley.

Overall the Delta Tournament was filled with lots of laughs, learning and fun times for players, coaches and fans!
