The Lady Bucs traveled to Monroe this weekend to participate in the Aurora Conference Championships.  The Buccaneers faced the Galena Hawks on Thursday to start off their tournament play.  The Bucs came out ready to play on Thursday night with their defense creating turnovers by the Hawks giving easy layups at the other end for the Lady Bucs.  They quickly jumped out to a 16-6 lead after the 1st quarter pushing that lead to 29-14 at the half.  The Bucs didn’t let up after the half and came out on fire adding 21 points in the 3rd with sharp shooting by Day, Wade, and Malcuit.  At the end of the 3rd it was the Bucs 50 and the Hawks 23.  The final score was Valdez 56 and Galena 36.  All Buccaneer players were able to get a significant amount of valuable time on the floor against Galena.  Destiny Day led all scorers on Thursday with 17 point, Rylee Wade had 15 points and both Kelli Malcuit and Izzy Kizer contributed 7 points each.

The Bucs found themselves facing the Monroe Rams on Friday night.  A team that is arguably one of the top 5 teams in the State including 4A schools.  To say the Rams are tough is an understatement.  Monroe has all the components of a great team…..size and talent at the post position, accurate shooting from the outside, really great defensive speed and the bench players and endurance to keep the pressure on for the entire game.  Monroe came out intense to start the game scoring 15 points to our 2 points in the 1st quarter and stretching that lead to 29-12 at the half.  Facing that pressure and in your face intensity minute after minute is exhausting both physically and mentally and was just too much for our young team to handle.  The Rams won by a score of 53-30 which might seem like a lot, but to only lose by 20 to a team of that caliber pretty impressive.  Destiny Day led all scorers on Friday with 8 points, Kelli Malcuit had 7 points, Izzy Kizer had 6, Rylee Wade had 5 points and Lola Compehos had 4.

The Bucs found themselves in a battle with the Delta Huskies on Saturday with the winner taking home the second place trophy and the second seat from the Aurora Conference at State.  The Bucs have beaten the Huskies pretty easily this season but the Huskies showed up to play probably the best game I have seen them play all year and the Bucs were still struggling to bounce back after the loss to Monroe the previous night.  The game was extremely physical and while it seemed every shot the Huskies threw up seemed to go in, the Bucs were struggling for every point they got.  The score went back and forth the entire game but the Lady Bucs never gave up and finally pulled away a little bit at the end of the 4th quarter getting the win by a score of 50-44.  Destiny Day led all scorers with 20 points, Lola Compehos had 11 points, Izzy Kizer had 9 points with some big free throws late in the 4th, Rylee Wade contributed 6 points.

The Bucs get a much needed week at home and then head off to State over spring break!

Izzy Kizer was named to the All Conference Sportsmanship Team

Destiny Day and Rylee Wade were both named to the All Conference Team
