The Lady Bucs traveled to Delta this last week to participate in the Dean Cummings Memorial Basketball Tournament.  Our tournament play started off on Thursday with the 9am early morning game against the Seward Seahawks.  The girls took a bit to wake up and get moving and found themselves down 14 to 7 in the first quarter but eventually came around winning the 2nd and 3rd quarters and found themselves with a 30-28  lead at the beginning of the 4th.  Unfortunately, after a hard-fought 4th quarter the Bucs came up a little short with the Seahawks scoring a game winning layup in the final few seconds of the game.  Final score was Seward 42 Valdez 40.  Lola Compehos led all scorers for the Bucs with 19 points, Izzy Kizer had 8 points, Destiny Day contributed 6 points and Rylee Wade had 5 points.

In Friday’s consolation bracket play the Buccaneers faced the Hutchison Hawks.  The Lady Bucs came out on fire scoring 29 points to Hutch’s 0 points in the first quarter.  By securing such a commanding lead early the Buccaneers were able to get the entire bench in early and get them a great deal of playing time.  Every single Buccaneer scored points in this game.  Despite this not being a challenging contest it was a great opportunity for all our players to get court time.  The final score was Valdez 61 and Hutchison 4.  Destiny Day and Elaine Gilson lead all scorers in this game with 12 points each, Rylee Wade had 10 points, and Lola Compehos scored 9 points.

The final game of the tournament for the Buccaneers was against the home team Delta Huskies.  Once again, the Lady Bucs found themselves with an early lead with a score of 23 to Delta’s 8 at the end of the first quarter.  Even though Delta was able to slow the pace of the Buccaneer scoring in remaining quarters the Buccaneers still came away with a 48-29 win over the Huskies.  Destiny Day led all scorers on Saturday with 20 points and Rylee Wade had 19 points in the contest.

Destiny Day and Lola Compehos were selected to the All-Tournament Team and Lola Compehos was the winner of the girl’s 3 point competition.

It’s another quick turnaround for the Lady Bucs this week as they leave for Bethel on Wednesday to compete in the Donlin Gold Basketball Tournament January 18th – 20th.
