Valdez Girls at the 2022-23 State Basketball Tournament


The Valdez girls earned the opportunity to compete in the 2022-23 State Basketball Tournament in Anchorage. The girl entered the tournament ranked 6th in the State and played 3 rd ranked Mt. Edgecumbe in their first game.

Wednesday, March 22: Valdez 34 vs Mt. Edgecumbe 49

Both teams got off to a slow start in the first quarter with a score of 5-8. The second quarter showed a couple of lead changes and Valdez was down 19-21 at half time. Mt. Edgecumbe stepped up their outside shooting in the 3 rd and 4 th quarter and outscored Valdez each quarter. Mt. Edgecumbe’s full court press causing 21 turnovers for the Lady Bucs and a low shooting percentage ended the game. The girls played hard to the very end.

Carsyn Hinkle had 8 points and 2 rebounds
Lily Brown had 5 points and 5 rebounds
Carlie VanBuskirk had 5 points and 4 rebounds
Masen Holmes had 4 points and 10 rebounds
Destiny Day had 4 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists
Lola Compehos had 3 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists
Mya Christoffersen had 3 points and 1 rebound

Thursday, March 23: Valdez 28 vs Kenai 39

Valdez had a rematch of last years State game against the Kenai Cardinal’s. It was a close game through all four quarters, but once again a low shooting percentage had the Lady Bucs only scoring 6 points in the final quarter to the Cardinals 13 points.

Masen Holmes had 10 points and 13 rebounds
Carlie VanBuskirk had 8 points and 4 rebounds
Destiny Day had 4 points and 2 rebounds
Carsyn Hinkle had 4 points and 2 rebounds
Lily Brown had 2 points and 3 rebounds

Masen Holmes was selected to play in the Senior State All-Star Game on April 15 at Grace Christian School.

It was a good season! The team showed great improvement throughout the year.
