Girls Basketball Weekend Results: Valdez vs Delta

The Valdez girls completed their regular Aurora Conference season with games in Delta.

Friday; March 3: (Valdez 43-Delta 27)
The girls hit the court ready to play and ran into a very determined Delta team. Delta’s, Lourdes Lester, came out shooting 3’s and had 13 points by half time. The Bucs were ahead 27-19 at half, but knew they needed to make some adjustments in the second half.

The defense stepped up and held Delta to only 4 points in the third and 4 points in the fourth quarter.

The inside game of Masen Holmes and Lily Brown proved to be too much for the Delta’s defense. Lily shot 4 for 7 from the field and made 7 of 8 free throws, to score 15 points, and had 6 rebounds. Masen Holmes added 12 points and 8 rebounds. Carsyn Hinkle added 8 points and had 5 assists as she got the ball inside to her fellow seniors. Destiny Day has 4 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Carlie VanBuskirk continues to add depth to the Lady Bucs bench as she came in strong and scored 4 points and had 2 rebounds.

Saturday; March 4: (Valdez 46-Delta 20)
On Saturday, the girls came out more prepared to face Delta, with some tough defense and to improve their full court press. They were able to hold Delta to only 6 points in the first half and keep Delta’s best shooter scoreless. Destiny Day and Mya Christoffersen had two difficult defensive assignments, and they managed to keep out of foul trouble and shut the shooters down. Carsyn Hinkle continued her defensive intensity and continually disrupted the Delta offense.

The inside game of Lily Brown and Masen Holmes dominated the game as they scored 12 and 14 points, respectively. Masen Holmes had a double double as she scored in double figures and had 10 rebounds. Carlie VanBuskirk came in off the bench and added 7 points and 8 rebounds. Destiny Day added 7 points and made all her free throws for the weekend.

This was a good series of weekend games to prepare for the Aurora Conference
Regional Tournament. The girls will return to Delta on Wednesday and play Galena in the first round of the Tournament on Thursday at 1:30.
