The GMS Volleyball season kicked off with an exciting start this weekend as we hosted matches against the Glennallen Panthers. Since the season began on January 4th, the players have been putting in the work to prepare for their first weekend of games.

A team’s Coach Craig writes: ” Our match on Friday night went to the third set, with us pulling out the win in the end.  We were a little shaky with our back row passing in the first set and lost 20-25.  Once all their jitters were out, they pulled together as a team and were able to win the next two sets with scores of 25-12 and 15-9.  The same scenario happened the next day where we lost the first set by 5 points and then won the next two sets.  Our A team is a brand new team with only 1 returning player from last year. We are spending these first few weeks working out the kinks and figuring out each player’s strengths so that we can come up with the best possible rotation that will hopefully continue to lead us to success.”

B team’s Coach Christensen writes: “It’s always a little nerve-racking playing the first game of the season.  The girls stepped on the court and quickly realized how important communication and teamwork is in the sport of volleyball.  For some, this was their first game as a volleyball athlete and for the other returning players, just as nervous.  They all had some good passes and consistent serving which landed us a win on Friday evening, winning 2 of 3 sets. Saturday morning, they worked hard and had some great plays and saves but fell short to the Panthers.  This week, we will hone in on some skills and get stronger and ready to travel to Delta this weekend. Great job, girls!”

C team’s Coach Fushchetto writes: “C team was nervous to play their first game of the season and for most of the girls their first volleyball games ever, but they came out focused and ready to play. Strong serving and lots of movement led to a win on Friday night in two sets 25-20 and 25-12. Saturday morning C team had the opportunity to play best three out of five sets.  They worked hard and made some great saves in close scoring games, but ultimately fell to the Panthers in four sets 23-25, 25-23, 22-25, and 12-25.  The girls had fun and played awesome! This week we’re back in the gym working hard as we prepare for next weekend’s tournament in Delta.”
