Lady Huskies A-team Valdez Invitational

The Valdez Lady Huskies brought a lot of fire to this weekend’s games at the Valdez Invitational Tournament. We started playing against the Glennallen Panthers after they advanced through the bracket to meet us in the second round. We had a strong start in the first quarter when we brought out our full-court press that was met with some success. However, the Panthers were able to keep us from transitioning into our press with their rebounds on the defensive end. The Lady Huskies were just a step behind the whole game, but their unexpected 3 point plays led to a tight fourth quarter. Glennallen was able to squeak ahead with a lead under ten points. We played hard to the final buzzer, but this game went to Glennallen.

Saturday morning’s game set a new standard for our Lady Huskies. We met our new opponent, the Nome-Beltz Nanooks, at a bright and early time of 9:00am. The Lady Huskies prepared extensively for this game by watching the opposing team play the day before and arriving early to the game for thorough preparation in warm-ups. When the first whistle started and the ball went up for tip-off, all 9 of our girls played with determination all 4 quarters. The tough and physical Nanooks started off early in a full court-press that we were able to out-maneuver and score many fast break layups off of. The Lady Huskies made the best of long minutes in-game without substitutions and worked their hardest. By halftime, we were trailing by two points, 12-14. Nome stopped their press as it was our best avenue of scoring so far, but we were able to grab more steals and convert them to fast break layups. By the third quarter, we had a cushion of 4 points against Nome. The game came down to free throws and a last second shot in the 4th quarter, but the Lady Huskies fell short by two points against the hard-fought Nome Nanooks.

Representing Valdez for the All-tournament team this year was Aliyah Valeriano and Parker King, who both barely had more than a minute break each game and played their hardest.

GMS Girls B Team Basketball 11.11.22 Game
The Valdez Huskies hosted several teams over two days of exciting basketball to wrap up their season. On Friday, the GMS Girls B Team played Glennallen Panthers, stepping up their defense and setting up their offense. They have been working hard the entire week and showing improvement in their skills. The girls were fired up for the game and executed on both ends of the court securing a well-deserved team win. Reagan L. and Ameila A. led the team with 6 points each followed by Peyton B. and Daisy G. contributing 2 points. Jezelle E helped with going 1 for 2 from the free throw line. The Huskies won 17 to 13.

GMS Girls B Team Basketball 11.12.22 Game
On Saturday morning, the Huskies Girls B Team once again matched up against the Glennallen Panthers for the GMS Tournament Girls B Team Championship Game. Glennallen came out playing tight man to man defense against the Huskies, allowing them to capitalize on several turnovers. The Valdez girls worked hard as a team and gave Glennallen a good fight but came up short in the championship game falling to the Panthers 5 to 17. Jezelle E. led with 3 points and Amelia A. contributed 2. Throughout the season, these young ladies proved they have a desire to improve their basketball skills and work together as a team. They have approached every game with a positive attitude, hustle on the court, support for eachother off the court and a desire to learn; all contributing to a successful basketball program that has a bright future for years to come.

Varsity Boys Basketball

This weekend the Husky Varsity Boys team took to the courts for the Valdez GMS tournament for the final weekend of games for the season. For the first game the Varsity Boys drew the Monroe Rams. The boys came out slow and couldn’t find their offensive rhythm and got behind in the first half. Second half they rallied back but couldn’t hold it and Monroe ended up winning 38-26. The next match up saw the Huskies go up against the Grace Christian Grizzlies. The boys came out fast and held strong the whole game behind Levi Wade’s big 25 point game and went on to win handily.

That would match the boys up against the Nome Nanooks with a chance to go to the championship game against Monroe. The boys came out fast but couldn’t stop the outside shooting of Nome and got behind by 18 early on. But the boys made a fierce comeback and pulled within 4 near the end of the 3rd quarter but couldn’t complete the comeback in what would end up being their final game of the season. All tournament honors went to Levi Wade and David Boone, and All Sportsmanship Team honors went to Merrick McCumby.

JV Boys Basketball

JV Boys Writeup- GMS tournament

The JV boys played two tough games in this weekend’s home tournament.  The Huskies first faced off against Glennallen. Though the boys fought hard, they were outmatched by the opponents rebounding ability. Tripp Carter was the only Husky to score this game, adding five points to the scoreboard. The Huskies ran a tight defense but could not pull out a win.

The second game against Monroe was a much closer battle.  The Huskies came out nervous, which gave Monroe a quick lead of 0-18 in the first half. However, the Huskies kicked up their intensity in the second half of the game.  Awesome defense held Monroe to a 4-point half! Logan Cason did a solid job inside the key and put several points up on the board. But in the end, the Huskies could not come back from Monroe’s early lead and lost with a final score of 8 – 22.

The boys had an excellent season and experienced a great deal of growth!  We look forward to another season of basketball in 2023!
