Girls Basketball Delta – Oct 14-15

The Lady Huskies had an exciting week playing against the visiting Delta Grizzlies this weekend. They started off strong right from the tip-off Friday night with 10 quick points against the Grizzlies’ zone defense, while holding them to 2 points in the first quarter. We struggled to keep scoring in the second quarter but our packline defense held them down to six points. We were able to build on the lead with some key layups in the third quarter but foul trouble caught up to us and made it a close game until the buzzer went off for the end of the fourth. We walked away with our first win of the season winning 24-22.

The second game in the series against the Grizzlies fared differently after they switched up their defense. The Lady Huskies had a difficult time penetrating to the basket against Delta’s man to man defense, and were unable to gain fast break layups against their press this game.  We beat them in the first quarter 6-4, however, went scoreless in the second quarter. Delta slowly earned a lead against us and won 18-9.

We look forward to 9 practices of hard work and refining our offense before heading up to compete in the Glennallen tournament.

Boys Basketball – Delta – Oct 14-15

Varsity: The Valdez GMS boys teams took to the court for some home games against the Delta Huskies this weekend. On Friday night, the Valdez Varsity boys started out slow but finished strong with a strong 53-24 win using strong unselfish play from the whole team. Saturday’s game saw the Varsity boys start really strong holding a 38-4 lead at halftime using strong defensive play followed up by an even stronger second half finishing the game with a 58-7. The Varsity boys showed strong unselfish play on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball . The Varsity boys will play next at the Glennallen Tournament October 28- 29th.

Boys Junior Varsity

Friday night’s game was full of excitement.  The Huskies ran an effective offense, creating the opportunity for several inside shots. Quick hands and feet on defense created multiple turnovers and fast break opportunities for the team, leading to a victory!

On Saturday, we broke the JV team into two groups. Our sixth graders came out aggressive in the first game! Impressive defense from Paul Torres, Trent Kocketiet, and Brad Wheeler, along with fast breaks, gave our team a quick lead. The Huskies were victorious with a final score of 22-9.

In the second match, Delta came out hard. Pressure on the ball forced the Valdez boys to utilize their press break.  Strong ball-handling from Tripp Carter, Rowyn Mayer, Rylen Freeman, Spencer Disney, and Malin Blood allowed the team to get the ball down the court. Strong inside performances from Levi Kompkoff and Logan Cason, along with the speed of Ryan Woods, kept the Huskies close the entire game. It was a nail-biter up to the end, but the huskies lost with a final score of 31-32.

I have seen so much improvement and growth with this group. We look forward to facing off with Delta again later this season.

The Girls B Team did a tremendous job attacking the basket and driving to the hoop with Amelia Alex, Ava Ruhl and Elaine Gilson each scoring 6 points. The Huskies fought hard as a team, picked up intensity on defense and scored a total of 30 points. We are learning a lot as a team, coming together and refining both our offense and defense. Each girls brings enthusiasm to practice and games and most importantly support to each of their teammates every time they step on the court.
