ASAA State Wrestling Championships

Congratulations to your 2021-22 state placers Carlie Vanbuskirk (4th place), Wyatt Williams (2nd place), and Alyvia Askren-Weber (2nd place)!

Freshman Carlie VanBuskirk started off hot with a 2nd period pin over Ketchikan’s Ruby McCue before falling to Soldotna’s Daisy Hannevold in the quarter-finals. She then battled her way through the consolation rounds to wrestle for third place, where she faced Soldotna’s Daisy Hannevold once again and fell in similar fashion. Congratulations Carlie on your 4th place finish and an incredible season!

Senior Wyatt Williams, the returning state champion at 119 pounds, dominated his way to the finals winning each match by pin. In the finals he faced Bethel’s Landon Smith where Wyatt lost by pin in the 2nd period. Wyatt ends his high school career as a three-time state placer, finishing 3rd in 2019-20, 1st in 2020-21, and 2nd in 2021-22. Wyatt is currently looking to continue his wrestling and academic career at Cornell College in Iowa. Congratulations Wyatt on a great career, and best of luck in Iowa!

Senior Alyvia Askren-Weber, the returning state champion at 189 pounds, battled her way to the finals where she faced Redington’s Twyla Anderstrom, eventually falling by a score of 10-1. Alyvia finishes her high school career as a two time finalist, 1st in 2020-21, and 2nd in 2021-22. Alyvia is looking to continue her wrestling and academic career at Umpqua community college in Roseburg, Oregon. Congratulations Alyvia on an amazing career!

Senior, Rylee Christensen had an outstanding 1st year wrestling.  It was amazing to watch this first-year wrestler improve over the season and then qualify for state.

Also competing at the State tournament were Jarrett Gage, Eli Critchlow, Dalen Beck, Warren Blood, Angelo Tudela, Jaxson Gallatin, Mckennan Mayer, and William Benes.

Next Season the Bucs will return one state placer and eight state qualifiers. I would like to say a special thank you to Angie Christensen, Austin Rake, Taylor Ellerman, Cody Greene, and Todd Wegner for all of the time dedicated to helping our student athletes. I would also like to thank all of the parents for your never ending support. The future is bright for buccaneer wrestling, go Bucs!!
