Denali Conference Wrestling Championships

Courtesy of VHS Coaches – Congratulations to the following Buccaneer wrestlers for qualifying for the 2021 ASAA State Wrestling Championships: Alyvia Askren-Weber, Carlie Vanbuskirk, Wyatt Williams, Jaxson Gallatin, Dalen Beck, and Mckennan Mayer. Leading the way for the Bucs was seniors Alyvia Askren-Weber and Wyatt Williams, both cruising their way to first place, and capturing their 2nd Denali Conference Championship. Alyvia also won the girls tournament’s “Outstanding Wrestler” award, an award given to the most dominant wrestler in the tournament. Placing 2nd was freshman Eli Critchlow and Dalen Beck, and placing third was Jaxson Gallatin, Mckennan Mayer, Warren Blood, William Benes, Carlie Vanbuskirk, and Rylie Christensen. Depending on how the bracket played out, some wrestlers were eligible for a “true second” wrestle back to qualify for the state tournament. The wrestlers winning true second were Mckennan Mayer, Jaxson Gallatin, and Carlie Vanbuskirk. Overall, I am extremely proud of how the team competed this past weekend, every individual peaked exactly when they were supposed to and wrestled the best I’ve ever seen. JV Basketball

Courtesy of VHS Coaches – This weekend the JV boy Buccaneer’s basketball team travelled to Palmer to compete in the Palmer Jamboree.   The Jamboree featured short 6-minute games that served the guys as a great chance to show off some of the work they have put in during the first week of the season.  Valdez played 5 games in total against some great teams: Colony, Palmer, East, Wasilla and finally Reddington in that order.  The first matchup against Colony was a defensive battle as the final score ended up 2-0 in a Valdez win.  Valdez played well against Palmer in their second game and coasted to an easy win.  Against East, Valdez was all over the court defensively, and on offense they had a lot of great open shots and cuts to the basket, nearly doubling the amount of shot attempts as their opponent, however they just couldn’t get the shots to fall and wound up losing by one point in a sudden death overtime round.  In their next two games, Valdez dominated every aspect of the game and earned two easy wins to end up 4-1 overall at the Jamboree.  Valdez’s next games will be after Christmas when the JV team travels to a Monroe JV tournament and the Varsity team heads to Ketchikan for a tournament of their own.

The Buccaneer ski team had a great first trip of the season in Palmer this weekend. Our
team traveled with 8 skiers, 5 of which were racing in their first high school race. Friday’s
competition was a 3.75k Skate race followed by a 5k Classic mass start on Saturday. These
were great distances to compete in our first race and will give us a great base time to continue
to improve throughout the year. Sophomores Rafe Carauthers and Barrett McCumby lead the
team. Rafe had an impressive race finishing 22 overall, and Barrett moved up 10 places on the
second day of racing finishing 31st. Great Job to all Buccaneer Skiers on a great first race!
