Courtesy of GMS Coaches – The Valdez Huskies emerged victorious in two games versus a good Glennallen team this weekend. Last time the two teams met, GMS split games with the Panthers but the Valdez girls stepped up their defensive this weekend. On Friday, the bigger Glennallen team couldn’t handle Valdez’ full court trapping press and the Panthers never got a chance to set up their offense. The Huskies won 21 to 14. Destiny Day had 10 steals and had four assists. Lola Compehos was leading rebounder Friday with five and Rylee Wade picked up four rebounds. Compehos and Kelsey Prax added three steals to the mix. On Saturday night, the Huskies switched it up and played man to man defense.

At the end of the 2nd quarter, the Huskies had held the Panthers to just three points and had eight points on the board. At the end of the third quarter, the Huskies led 20 to 5. In the 4th quarter, Glennallen mounted a comeback but fell short. The Huskies went on to win the game by a score of 22 to 15. “We have been working on help defense all week and the girls really improved and stepped up their intensity,” said coach Laurie Prax. “I was extremely pleased with all 11 players that stepped on the court Saturday night. They all worked together and we are improving with every practice”.

Courtesy of GMS Coaches – The Valdez girls gave the Glennallen B team a run for their money this weekend, but came up short in their games Friday and Saturday night. In Friday night’s contest, Aliya Valeriano did a great job handling the ball and Elaine Gilson and Alesha Totemoff stepped up the defense and chased down rebounds. Despite a great effort, the Huskies lost by a score of 11 to 15. Elaine Gilson led all scorers with six points. Valeriano had five steals and two assists on Friday and Totemoff pulled down five rebounds. On Saturday night, Lilia Rissman played aggressively and had four steals in the 7 to 18 loss. Totemoff had six rebounds Saturday and Gilson picked up three steals. Valeriano led all scorers with 4.

BOYS A TEAM
Courtesy of GMS Coaches – The boys A team played two games against the 9th grade boys this weekend.  Both games were very competitive, and saw the Middle School A-Team come out on top.  These were both great team wins with important contributions coming from all players on both ends of the floor.  Thanks to the 9th graders from coming out and playing this weekend, a fun time was had by all.

BOYS C TEAM

Courtesy of GMS Coaches – The GMS “C” Team had an opportunity to step in and play Glannellen this weekend in the “B” games.  It proved to be a great learning experience for this team.  The games on both Friday and Saturday were close, as the Huskies lost by 1 in overtime on Friday, then by two on Saturday morning.

This was the first time the players had been put in a “real game” situation, and they responded very well.  The guys played hard, and did not back down.  One of the things we look for is continual improvement, and the team showed improvement from Friday into Saturday’s games.
This group is coachable, and understands the importance of using every opportunity to get better.  I was very proud of how hard they played, and how they stepped up against an experienced middle school team and took both games down to the wire.
