Varsity Volleyball

Contributed by Coach Madison Fleming – This weekend we traveled to Fairbanks for Conference games against the Hutchinson Hawks. On Friday, the girls had a great game winning the match, 3-1. Momoe Togagae had a fantastic night in the front row. Both setters, Ambrosia Woodgate and Reese King, had played great all around. Both had several great defensive plays.

On Saturday, the girls came out stronger from the beginning and swept Hutchinson 3-0. Masen Holmes and Savannah Cockerham had great games on the net as well as serving. Rylie King and Aly Metzger had strong defense that was essential in the teams win.

Lady Bucs vs. Hutchison Hawks
October 16-17

Contributed by Coach Katie Burns – The Lady Bucs JV did a great job against the Hutchison Hawks in this past weekend’s games.

On Friday night the Bucs came out strong and won in three quick sets, (25-10, 25-18, and 25-12). Ember Leadbetter led the team in serving for the evening with 34 strong serves, 12 of which were Aces. Olivia Selanoff, Jaimie Crisp, and Bella Smelcer were also high servers for the night. Saturday morning the team played just as well, winning in 4 sets against the Hawks (25-21, 25-11, 21-25, and 25-18).

These games were special because we were able to play athletes in some different roles that they usually do not play. For instance Selanoff, typically our Libero in the back row, was able to play all the way around and hit outside as an offensive player. Also, both middle hitters, Smelcer and Marcedes Taylor, served and played back row as defensive specialists in addition to the front row. Crisp was able to play as a setter on the court so that the team could continue with their 6-2 offense (allowing for 6 hitters and 2 setters on the court). All the players had personal goals for their performance in these games, but one goal in particular was accomplished by Denali Woods. This athlete has been working on her serve all season long, and it was her personal goal to serve
in one of our sets this weekend. The whole team felt a victory when Woods stepped up to the line and successfully sent a bullet of a serve over to the other court.

Woods is just one of many examples of great growth in players over this season. Alina
Kochenteit is doing a great job playing defensive in the back row. Christina Wise made a few outside attacks this weekend from outside. Taylor, playing back row, was able to help the setter and set up our opposite offensive position, showing great Game IQ in action.

Our continued team goals for the remainder of the season and beyond: everybody talks,
everybody moves, everybody wants the ball. We want to eliminate our hesitations and build on communication on the court.

Great weekend! Go Bucs!
