Varsity Volleyball

Contributed by Coach Madison Fleming – This weekend we traveled to Eielson for conference matches. Friday night was a tough match but we played strong and won in the end (3-2). Throughout the match, Rylie King had great digs in middle back. Savannah Cockerham had another great weekend serving while leading the team in aces this weekend. The girls really came together as a team in the final two sets. It is great to see how far they have come this season on the floor.

On Saturday, we had a slow start but really picked it up after the first set, winning 3-1. Masen Holmes had a fantastic match both on the net and a multiple serving streaks. She was a force blocking and hitting from the middle. Setters, Reese King and Ambrosia Woodgate both played strong defense and had great assists to keep the team’s offense unpredictable. We are now 4-0 in conference and looking forward to the Grace Christian Tournament next weekend.

Valdez Buccaneers vs. Eielson Ravens
October 2-3

Contributed by Coach Katie Burns – The Lady Buccaneers JV Volleyball team earned another full victory this past weekend when they faced the Eielson Ravens on the Raven’s home court.

The Bucs’ strong serving, especially by Lily Brown, Ember Leadbetter, and Desi Woodgate, pushed them into an early lead against the Eielson Ravens on Friday evening, winning the first two sets handily (25-16 and 25-14). The next two sets, however, gave the Bucs a run for their money as they struggled to stay connected to each other and communicate on defense. Set 3 was a battle back and forth exchanging points with Eielson, who finally claimed the victory (22-25). Energy level was at an all-time low on the court for the Bucs during Set 4. Eielson earned the game win with a score of 16-25, the lowest of the night for the Buccaneers. In the final set of the night for the junior varsity team, a spark of their fire rekindled and the girls edged back into the game, point by point, Eielson pushing back to the very end. The Bucs held onto the victory with a final score of 17-15. These are important matches to come out on top. Having lost the last two sets, it would be easy for some players to give up or continue to play defeated, but these girls, once again, showed mental toughness and grit but seeing the game through and pulling off another win.

In the first set on Saturday morning the Buccaneers came out a ball of fire, defeating the Ravens 25-8. Serving continued to be the driving force of the game. Brown also was able to shine as an offensive threat on the net with her wicked line-shot to the backcourt. The next two sets were much more tightly matched, exchanging points with the Eielson Ravens. In the second set the Bucs were down 6-14 when Leadbetter stepped to the service line. Ten straight serves later, with three Aces in the mix, the Bucs were in the lead 16-14. Our team ended up winning sets 2 and 3 (25-18 and 25-22).

Another fun weekend for the books. Way to go Lady Bucs!
