Courtesy of Coach Sharrai – The Bucs headed to the State Volleyball tournament this past weekend on Wednesday for an afternoon 3:00 practice to ready themselves for the upcoming matches in Anchorage.

Beginning play against Sitka to start things off on Thursday at 11:45 the Bucs struggled to create the rhythm and find the game they wanted to play which led them to dropping game one with Sitka 18 -25.  The Bucs took a deep breath, regrouped their efforts, and fired away in the second game changing leads several times to approach game point with Sitka but again coming up short at 23 – 25.  The y Bucs were still struggling to come together in their rhythm and communication in game 3 leaving them just short again at 23–25 to Sitka.

The Bucs now with one loss would have to play a long road back if they wanted into the championship in this double elimination tournament.   The Bucs showed up to an empty court around 9 and began warming up Friday while they had the court to themselves for half an hour.  Everything seemed to be falling in place and the Bucs felt pretty good as the start of the game neared with the Barrow Whalers.  Play began slowly, however, for the Bucs as they struggled again to put together their game-plan which unfortunately led the Bucs to lose 3 straight to the Whalers ending their play at State and bringing their season to a close.

Buc Savannah Cockerham did receive the honor of Outstanding Server for 3A – very nice accomplishment and keep serving it up next year!    The Bucs had a great season and earned their way to State playing hard through regionals.  I know the Bucs wished things had turned out a little differently for them at State but none the less they held their composure and still learned much from their experience.   The Bucs enjoyed the State tournament and had a very good time playing and watching all the action in the big arena.  Buc Volleyball has to say goodbye to seniors Macy Hansen, Kira Friend, Jade Holmes, Jillian Fleming, Maison Anderson, and Jackie Stewart—a pretty easy going group who laughed and smiled together–thanks for a great season.  The returning Bucs have already acknowledged a Buccaneer goal to do their best to earn their way back for another State Volleyball Championship.

AS ALWAYS– DO YOUR VERY BEST TO PLAY YOUR BEST,—&–,GO BUCS!!!!

Wrestling

Courtesy of VHS Coaches – After a week of illnesses running through the team, we sent 7 wrestlers to the Lancer Smith Memorial Tournament in Wasilla. Regardless of the low numbers, illness, and injury the few that traveled wrestled hard and fought through much adversity throughout the weekend. Our goal is to rest up and get healthy as we prepare for our trip to Kodiak this next weekend.

All teams shot their Standing 60 air rifle match previous to the match. Hutch took first place with total score of 2255. Valdez took second with a total team score of 2238 points, followed by Lathrop with 2195 points and West Valley with 2169 points.

Sara Bauman, Tiffany Larcom, Ashlee Schaeffer, Sydney McKay, and Jared Humphrey shot for contributing scores (with the top four scores counting for the total). At the end of the day Valdez came up short by six points from Hutch’s combined score of 4445 points with a total of 4439 points. Both of the Buccaneer’s team smallbore and air rifle scores were team bests for the season.

Thank you to Lathrop, West Valley, and Hutchison for hosting this past weekend! The Buccaneers will have a postal match (where a match is shot and scores are shared electronically) this weekend against West Valley, before having an open weekend during Thanksgiving Break.
