THE BUCS ARE HEADED TO STATE !!! Regional play kicked off for the Bucs
Thursday night at 5pm in the Eielson Ravens gym as a three seed down to Hutch and
Monroe. The first match was with Galena which the Bucs took care of in three
straight 25-9, 25-8, and 25-5 to set up their next match with Hutch the following day
at noon.

Hutch kicked off to a good start against the Bucs taking a close game one 25-
23. Collecting their efforts the Bucs dug in upping their intensity and effort to take
games two, three, and four 25-19, 25-22, and 25-20 solidifying their chance that
evening at 7pm against Monroe to advance to the Championship and an automatic
birth to State.

The Bucs had a rough start to kick their match off with an end result of 25-
16 leaving them searching for their rhythm which they continued through the 2 nd
game at 25-19 placing them 2 games down. The Bucs dug a little deeper finding the
drive that would gain them a win at 25-18. With a renewed sense of urgency the
Bucs pushed on and battled the Rams just coming up short at 23-25 to give the
match and automatic State qualification to Monroe. This would send the Bucs onto
the semi-final ultimately with the Hutchison Hawks who had worked their way back
up through the losers bracket to face Valdez in the semi-finals and advancement to
the Championship and State next week.

The Bucs went at it and another point by point effort from both teams
provided another close game which the Hawks came out on top at 25-23. The Bucs
knowing what is on the line dug deep again and found a little more fight than the
Hutchison Hawks had to keep a few point advantage as point 25 closed in. Holding
their efforts up the Bucs took the next three games 25-19, 25-22, and earned their
way to State with the final game 25 -20 also setting up the Championship game with
Monroe 30 minutes later.

The Championship game started off with a 26-28 battle that the Bucs lost but
rebounded in game 2 to even the score one game a piece at 25-14. Trouble found
the Bucs in game three as they struggled to find a collective rhythm dropping game
3 at a disappointing 25-9. Game 4 began with similar struggles as the Bucs fell
behind but they found their motivation to play with urgency and fought their way
back into a close battle that the Bucs won 25-23 to push a 15 point tie-breaker with
the Monroe Rams. The tie-breaker continued in similar fashion with a point by
point effort from both teams up through 8-8 , then 9-9, providing some great rallies
but ultimately the Rams chipped away leaving the Bucs down 11-15 and 2 nd place
overall for the regional competition. Earning All Conference Team Honors for the
Bucs were Savannah Cockerham, Jillian Fleming, and Jade Holmes with Maison
Anderson also earning the Good Sportsmanship Award. Nice Job Bucs and keep up
your great efforts!!!

Everyone on the Buc roster contributed at some point and here is how they
do that. Reese King sets opposite Jade Holmes who also serves. Macy Hansen is an
outside hitter-OH and C as well has help set in one rotation. Kira Friend is in the
serving line-up and passes back row as a defensive specialist-DS. Savannah

—–,GO BUCS!!!!

Swimming

Courtesy of VHS Coaches – The Valdez Buccaneer swim team traveled back to Anchorage to participate in the State Meet for Swimming. Our swimmers Isaiah Silveira, Chase Randall, & Billi Lovell swam fast and had an incredible State Meet. This was the first season that all Qualified swimmers made State Finals in individual events.

Isaiah and Chase had equally tremendous swims in the 100 Backstroke & Butterfly. Isaiah in preliminaries set a personal best time of :58.80 in his 100 Backstroke qualifying for Finals and taking 8th place overall finishing higher than where he seeded originally in the meet. Chase also in preliminaries set a personal best time of :55.70 in the 100 Butterfly qualifying for Finals and taking 8th place overall finishing higher than where he was seeded too.

Billi Lovell had an incredible meet showing more focus than any other time this season. Prelims started out very well for Billi setting a personal best time by 2 seconds in her 200 Individual Medley. Next she surprised us all in prelims with an excellent 100 Breaststroke swim surpassing 7 swimmers to make finals.

She set another personal best time of 1:10.06 in her Breaststroke Finals swim to take 8th place overall moving a great deal higher than where she was seeded originally. For this Billi Lovell in the Swimmer of the Week!

The Valdez Buccaneer swim team overcame a great deal & Broke Records; this season has by far been the best in 9 seasons. Coaching this team has been a privilege & we look forward to the future success of the Valdez Buccaneer Swim Team.

th.

Wrestling

Courtesy of VHS Coaches – The Valdez wrestlers ended the weekend with some of their best performances yet. Each and every wrestler showed much improvement from last week in Fairbanks. They did a great job elevating their pace to a new level to really push their opponents to their breaking points. Our hand fighting has improved greatly enabling our wrestlers to take advantage of our conditioning and open up their offense. We head back to the wrestling room again this week to raise the bar yet another level. We can see our improvements yet we understand that we have far more room to grow. Our mindsets are strong and our technique and conditioning are improving daily.

We ended the weekend with two wrestlers taking home some hardware. Two wrestlers found their way to the podium. Alyvia Askren, Timothy Schantz, and Kyle Henderson came within one to two matches of placing with some amazing performances.

Sullivan Holt placed 4th in the 160 lb division picking up three pins along the way. Sullivan’s energy and commitment to the sport have really paid off and we are starting to see the results of his hard work.

Jana Allen placed 2nd, taking out the runner up at 235 lbs and revenging her three losses to Megan Parrish of North Pole High School. Her only loss was to the returning state Champion, Debranna Bealer from Eielson High School. Jana wrestlers a hard-fought match, however, got caught in a throw in the second period. Jana has her eyes set on getting revenge next week at Lancer Smith, proving that she deserves the top spot on the podium.
