Wrestling

It was a long but exciting weekend of wrestling. Many of our beginning wrestlers got the chance to experience a wrestling tournament and the excitement of cheering on their teammates as they enter into combat.

As a coach, I could not be more proud of the way our young athletes competed this past weekend. They left everything out on the mat and have their minds focused on learning and getting better. We are now focused on our next competition at home, Throwdown in Snowtown!

Hutchison 10/18-19/19
Head Coach: Adam Sharrai
Assistant Coach: Katie Burns
Assistant Coach: Angie Fruscetto

Buc Volleyball loaded up Friday morning and headed to Hutchison Hawk
territory in Fairbanks for Friday and Saturday conference games. After a long bus
ride the Bucs got busy knocking off some bus rust and preparing themselves for
what they knew would be competitive games with the Hawks. The Bucs rhythm
eluded them in the first two games as they dropped both to the Hawks 17 -25
followed with 13-25. Not content with their efforts they regrouped and played with
more intensity in their third game but also fell short at 22 – 25 to end that nights
match play. Saturday morning play began after Senior recognition and the Bucs
went to work in what would be a point by point battle after making some lineup
adjustments that would exhaust all of the teams 18 allowable substitutions. The
first game took a turn at 11 – 11 and the Hawks inched away from the Bucs earning
a 1 – 0 lead. Game two proved equally exciting as both teams battled for advantage
and another point by point advance kept everyone moving until the Bucs gained that
advantage 24-23 and were able to capitalize on game point to take game two 25 -23.
Game three could have been the same game but the Hawks got the push to go up 2
games to 1 on the Bucs ending at 24-26 in another great effort by both teams. The
4 th game remained true to the morning play as both teams continued to battle for
their points, however, the Lady Bucs unfortunately handed the Hawks a few
unforced errors at 15 – 14 and the Hawks used them to their advantage ending
game 4: 25-18.

The Bucs played and adapted well to Hutchison and are looking forward to
honing their skills and improving their quick court play over the next two and half
weeks in preparation for Regional play and the chance to earn their way to the State
competition. The Bucs have an open weekend this week of homecoming and will
play the Delta Huskies the following weekend followed by Regionals. Great job
adapting as a team and work hard to enhance all aspects of your court play. —–Go
Bucs!!!

J.V. Volleyball Vs. Hutchison

The JV volleyball team got off to a slow start this weekend vs. Hutchison.
Ultimately, they rallied to split the Friday game losing the first set 21-25, but
they pulled together to win the second set 25-21. Due to timing only 2
games were played, resulting in a tie. Saturday morning the Bucs came
together and pulled off a win in four sets 21-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-19. The
team focused on the fundamentals of the game, as they worked on their
passing and communication. The depth of talent on the team allowed us
the opportunity to mix and match the lineup, which led to our victory over
the Hawks.

VHS Rifle Team TVSA Match Results

The VHS Rifle Team traveled to Fairbanks for a two-day 3×20 smallbore competition against all
the Fairbanks rifle teams and Delta’s team. All six members of the team traveled to compete at
the Tanana Valley Sportsman’s Association.

All teams shot their Standing 60 air rifle match previous to the TVSA match. Valdez took the top
score in air rifle with a total team score of 2231 points. Sara Bauman (562 points), Jared
Humphrey (549 points), Tiffany Larcom (560 points), and Layla McAtee (545 points) all scored
personal bests.

The first day of competition took place on Friday, the 18th and saw the VHS Buccaneers face
the Lathrop Malamutes and the West Valley Wolf Pack. Sara Bauman, Tiffany Larcom, Sydney
McKay, Ashlee Schaeffer, and Jared Humphrey shot for contributing scores (with the top four
scores being counted towards the total). The team total was 2181 points. At the end of the day,
Valdez came out on top with a combined score of 4412 points to Lathrop’s 4225 and West’s
3786. Layla McAtee, who participated as an alternate, scored a personal best of 522 points.
Tiffany Larcom was the top competitor of the afternoon with a total of 571 points out of 600.

The second day of competition on Saturday had Valdez matched against Hutchinson in person
and Delta, who submitted their scores as a postal match. Sara Bauman, Sydney McKay, Jared
Humphrey, and Layla McAtee comprised the scoring team, as Tiffany and Ashlee had to leave
early to attend the Women of Distinction Awards Banquet. This match was a difficult one, as
many of the competitors worked through frustrations with their various positions and one
shooter ended the match with having to borrow a rifle from Hutch after experiencing a
malfunction. In the end Valdez had a total smallbore score of 2098 points for the second day,
placing us second with a combined score of 4329 points.

A huge thank you goes to Hutch, Lathrop, and West Valley for hosting this competition. Both
days allowed our team to identify areas of improvement, so we will be ready for our next match
the 2nd of November against Delta. Congratulations to Ashlee Schaeffer for receiving the Young
Woman of Distinction Award and to Tiffany Larcom for being nominated along with her
teammate.
