Girls Varsity Team

Gilson Middle School took one girl’s varsity team and two JV teams to the Delta basketball tournament this past weekend. The Girls Varsity Team lost to Nenana in the Championship game. Chloe Auble and Acacia Montgomery were high scorers with 5 points apiece. Chloe Auble was named to the all-tournament team.

The JV team #2 lost in the semi-final round to a very physical Tri Valley team who advanced to the final game. Valdez’ JV team #1 matched up with Tri Valley in the Championship game Saturday and beat them by a score of 24 to 21. Sydney Burton scored 14 points to lead the Huskies.

“Both JV Girls teams showed a lot of grit and determination throughout the tournament”, said coach Laurie Prax. “Both Mr. Gibbs and I were pleasantly surprised with how the girls worked as a team. All the girls exhibited great manners on and off the court and it was fun to see them improve each game”.

With three teams in the tournament the Huskies were busy. The Valdez girls played a total of 12 games in two days. Managers Ginger Keller and Bella Friend did a great job keeping up with the action.

Boys Basketball

Coaches Joe Robison and Wyatt Duncan – The boys basketball teams had a great trip to Delta this weekend.  Both A and B teams won their tournaments, without either team losing a game.  The guys played hard, and played really well.  One of our goals is to get better with each game and each tournament, and we feel like we left Delta better than when we arrived.

Grayson Ade and Nick Alfaro had excellent tournaments for the JV boys.  For the Varsity, Bryce Tucker, Allen Watson, and Hunter Matthews played well.  Allen Watson was named to the All-Tournament team and Bryce Tucker was named tournament MVP.

Coaches Joe Robison and Wyatt Duncan wanted to compliment the kids on their behavior.  Our kids were very well behaved, and other people took notice of that.  Delta is always complimentary of our teams and how they represent Valdez, and this weekend was no exception.  Many times when we are at tournaments, there are numerous kids that do not respect the building or the host school.  Our kids behavior speaks for itself, and it gives Valdez a good name.  I am very proud for how they represent the school, our community, and their families.
