This weekend the varsity volleyball team set off to compete against Colony High School on Thursday before heading in for the annual Grace Christian Invite. Due to over scheduling, the girls had to play Colony’s JV team. It was a great warm up game after the long drive with the girls all getting in to play and winning 3-0. Friday was the start of Pool Play for us at Grace. This was 8 games against some of the top 3A and 4A teams in the state. The girls came out and played amazing. Our coverage, defense, and attacking set us apart from the other teams. Our blocking and digs made it tough for teams to get a point on us and our offensive attackers were effective at finding holes in the other teams. They went 7-0 on Day 1 and had one more pool play match to start off Saturday morning. This was great as the girls beat Kenai, Solodotna, and Colony which are huge wins for us as they are in the 10 ten in the state along with us.
On day 2, the girls finished out pool play beating MCCA making them the only team of the 18 competing to go into bracket play undefeated. Bracket play started off with the girls playing against Colony again. This was a tough game that was close the entire match. The girls fought hard but lost both sets. This meant we had to fight back through the losers bracket to make it to the championship. We faced off next against Kenai again. The first two were point for point with each of us taking a set. This was a huge game and went into the third set where the girls pushed hard to take the last set and knock Kenai out of the tournament. Next up we had to battle Homer who was on a roll this tournament and had taken down Nikiski in pool play then both Kenai and Monroe in bracket play. We started off slow and lost the first set but came back and took the second. The third set was incredible with the girls running out of time, Homer could’ve won by one point but celebrated too early and were out of rotation when they served. This gave us a point with 2 seconds left on the clock and tied with Homer. This meant we had the serve and the next point won the match to go on and face Nikiski. The girls gave it everything and got the final point. We faced off immediately after with Nikiski but fell short both sets. The girls played amazing this weekend and we are so proud of them. Our next games are the 24-25th at the Dimond/Service Tournament.
