21% of employees in Valdez work in the public sector. 4% are Federal employees, 5% work for the State, and 12% are City employees. The primary Federal Government employer in Valdez is the US Coast Guard (USCG). Prince William Sound College (PWSC) accounts for 42% of state employment in the community.
Payroll for City employees was $23.9 million in 2024, up from $18.1 million in 2018. Local government wages increased by 26% between 2018 and 2023, and rose another 5% in 2024 after a 2019 salary study suggesting some salaries were not competitive.
In 2024, the City employed a workforce of 325. Ten Tribal government jobs are included in this figure.
