Phoebe Winchester’s Essay:
Surviving the wind has been easy, but I think I’ve just adapted to this environment. During the past wind storms, it sounded like a dog howling faintly, trees looking like they were going to tip over, air tasting like winter, always feeling like a spaceship the size of the white house landed a block away from wherever I am, and smelling like October.
My house is loud during the windstorms. Brownouts keep happening and there was a significantly large spanning power outage just a little bit ago.
All I do is come prepared: snow pants, coat, gloves, a hat, boots, etc. In Valdez, most people have a grasp on wind, snow, sleet, rain, and ice, so surviving in somewhat ‘harsh’ conditions is easy, if you have the right supplies.
Though, one thing that has been scary to deal with is cars. In my family’s case, our car stopped working because water got in the gas lines and froze, telling the ‘brain’ of the car that we were out of gas. Also, the wind keeps pushing our car to the side of the road, mostly on the bridge to get out of town. (What a convenience…)
To conclude, yes, the wind has been stronger this year, but just lending a friend a warm jacket to wear can make us survive it.
Crista Andersen’s Essay:
Park into the wind, that way your door doesn’t fly off of your vehicle or hit another vehicle when you open it!
Have your back to wind when your puppy is out on the poop trail line in the yard.
Have ice cleats on so the wind doesn’t blow me across the driveway as easily on the ice!
Wear my under armour and beanie in the house nder my regular cozy clothes to stay warm!
Don’t go outside. Have some tea and listen to it roar!
Last but not least, don’t own a trampoline. 😁
