The Lady Bucs ventured off to Kodiak to participate in the 57th Annual Joe Floyd Tournament in their first weekend of play this season.  Despite 3 of our starters feeling under the weather the Bucs put up quite a fight in their first round of play against the North Pole Patriots.  Unfortunately, our time and energy ran out, ending with North Pole coming out on top by a score of 56 to 55.  Leading scorers were Destiny Day with 19 points, Lola Compehos with 14 points, and Hali Fitka contributed 12.

Still not running at 100 percent the Bucs came out fighting in their second game of the tournament against the home team and a large home crowd cheering on their Kodiak Bears.  Both teams were very evenly matched and the Bucs found themselves with a narrow lead at the end of 3 quarters.  However, Kodiak just could not keep the pace and withstand the speed and intensity of the defense of the Bucs.  At the end of 4 the Bucs came away with the win by a score of 44 to 36.  Leading scorers for the Kodiak game were Lola Compehos with 13 points, Destiny Day with 12 points and Rylee Wade with 10 points.

Adversity continued to mount for the Lady Bucs on day 3 of competition as the Bucs found themselves without senior starters Destiny Day and Kelli Malcuit.  This left some big shoes to fill for some very young teammates.  With both senior guards on the bench, the Bucs struggled getting the ball up the floor against a quick Minto press.  However, our young players worked hard and never gave up and our remaining veteran players worked their tails off trying to provide additional support to their young teammates as well as fulfill their roles on the court.  The Bucs came up a little short to the Minto Lakers by a score of 61-54.  Parker King led all scorers with 14 points, Rylee Wade added 11, Elaine Gilson scored 10, and both Lola Compehos and Hali Fitka contributed 8.

So proud of all these girls!!  We had some very strong play in the paint as well as some consistent scoring from several players and great contributions from our bench this weekend.  Really looking forward to getting everyone healthy and competing in the Subway Classic in Nome next week!

Rylee Wade was named this year’s Free Throw Champion at the tournament shooting 76%.  Destiny Day and Rylee Wade were both named to this year’s All Tournament Team.

Last but not least, I need to recognize an incredible accomplishment by our senior leader Destiny Day.  In game 1 against the North Pole Patriots Destiny scored the 1000th point of her high school career.  This is not a milestone reached by many and represents years of dedication, hours working in the gym, commitment to her team and her love for the game of basketball.  We are sooo proud of her!!
