City Clerk Elise Sorum-Burk provided clarification on the Bed Tax ordinance discussion covered in KVAK’s e-mail news and discussed in the City Council meeting.
The administrative red line draft ordinance only suggests the following limited changes:
- Fixing the definition section to include “rental cabins”- a new title 17 definition that was missed when we last updated this code a couple of year ago.
- Ensure that code accurately reflects what information from returns is confidential versus what might be a public record.
- Simplifying language related to investigations and suits for collection.
- Removing reference to the codified application process (that exist in code currently but has not been used).

Please note that B&Bs have always been subject to the tax and fall under the definition of short term rental (already in code).
The other information referenced in the memo is simply background research that council has asked for to provide context as to what other municipalities currently do and to inform them of their options.
Staff has not recommended any specific policy changes – and has been clear about this in prior discussions – any changes to rate or scope of the tax are up to Council to discuss and provide direction to administration on.
