Valdez Buccaneer Football vs. Seward Seahawks

Submitted by VHS Football Coach- This past weekend the Buccaneer football team traveled to Seward with 13 players to take on the defending state champs.  Uncharacteristically, it was a beautiful, warm, sunny day for fall football in Alaska.

The Seahawks quickly showed why they are again favored to win the 9-man league again this year. On the first play of scrimmage, they rounded the corner and took the ball 50 yards for a touchdown. The Bucs had difficulty matching the speed and intensity of the Seahawks and struggled defensively throughout the game.

The Bucs did have success in reaching the end zone, however. Dylan Passage caught a beautiful ball thrown by Merrick McCumby, and then outraced the Seahawk secondary before finally being caught a couple yards short of the end zone. Kyle Peterson successfully ran it in on an ensuing play, and Merrick McCumby scored on the 2 point conversion.

Ultimately, the physicality of the Seward team far outmatched the Bucs. By half-time, the Bucs had 2 players with turned ankles, one with a lingering bruised wrist, and another unable to continue due to coach’s decision. With insufficient players at every needed position, the Buccaneers conceded the game at halftime and were unable to finish. The final halftime score was 69-8 in favor of the Seahawks.

This coming week, the Bucs visit the Peninsula again to face the Nikiski Bulldogs.
